Can anyone elaborate on their experience with partial breast radiation after lumpectomy?

I had radiation therapy two years ago - 33 sessions - because I chose lumpectomy over mastectomy.  It took commitment to meet the schedule, but I had few side effects.  Someone suggested that you should avoid using personal hygiene products with ingredients that contain metals, so I did that, and (maybe for that reason?) I had no burns during the treatment.

It is very important to maintain physical activity during and after treatment.  Sometimes you will  feel extra tired, but if you maintain activity you will actually have more energy. I was not expecting it to take so long to build the muscles in that arm back to full strength, so I was disappointed that it took more than a year.

I don't know about longterm effects and would be interested in responses from folks who had this treatment 10+ years ago.

I had partial breast radiation after lumpectomy in spring 2007.  There are several ways that it is being done:  with Mammosite, with interstitial catheters, and several other ways.  It would help if we knew what type you are being offered.

As for me, I am doing fine.  I had no significant side effects, and I am very pleased with the outcome nearly 3 years later.

You might want to consider posting under the "Radiation Therapy" forum, also.  Or you could do a search of the entire discussion board for partial breast radiation.  It's been discussed a lot over the past few years.

Hi somersher!  I just sent you a personal message....I hope this information helps you!  Yes, I had the MammoSite Device also... If you look under the topic, somewhere in Radiation, you will find a thread I posted, showing you the MammoSite Device...Or at the top of this page, click "search"...and type in MammoSite Device, & different threads will show up...this should help you!  We'll all be here if you have any questions!  Jeannette

Hi! I am awaiting surgery for DCIS-2nd one to clear margin.  I was told my entire right breast must be radiated the first 5 weeks and then it will be pin pointed the last week.  Could you tell me if there is something I am not aware of.  Thanks!  lisamcknito
