  • my name is Kellee and i am 24 yrs old, i have just been dx with stage II invasive ductal carcinoma... unfortunately at the wrong time in my life (not that anytime is a good time) but I am graduating nursing school tomorrow... :-( slight damper on the day..... I dont have any children, and i most def want to have some in the future, my boyfriend is very supportive but i am so nervous about treatment and the chance of infertility..... i dont know if i should get a mastectomy and hopefully avoid chemo, or have chemo and then still have a chance of disfigured breast.... i guess i really just need encouragemet, or other ppl's stories.... im so confused and fustrated right now, i am trying my best to keep the postive attitude i exude but it is extremely hard now days.... any advice? words of encouragement? stories of your experience? anything???

Hi kellee24!! What you are feeling is completely normal. Congratulations on finishing nursing school, yay!!Smile This disease sucks and it always comes at you at an unexpected time, but think of it this way at least you are done with school. Being diagnosed and figuring out a treatment plan is not an easy pill to swallow, so try to enjoy your day. I was 25 when diagnosed, 26 now, and I had to take a leave of absence from school, and not exactly sure when I'll go back Tongue out.  I was also scared of losing my hair, breast, and becoming sterile. Here I am a year later with new hair, a sunburned breast from radiation, and menstruating. I don't have any kids but I want to have them someday. You can do this and you are not alone.

Hi Kellee, I'm sorry you have to be here, but welcome to the boards.  It's a great place for information and support.  I was 32 years old with a 21 month old son at the time of diagnosis.  We were just a few months away from trying for baby #2 when I found the lump.  I had a mastectomy with of just the left breast, with immediate reconstruction, did 6 rounds of TAC chemo and I'll be finishing my 28 rads on Monday.  I am waiting for my exchange surgery now but so far I'm happy with my decision to do the unilateral mastectomy.  I have had long hair my entire life so losing it wasn't easy (bothered me way more than losing the breast, which is odd since the hair is temporary) but I'm used to it now.  It's unbelievable how quickly I can get ready in the morning when I don't have a big mop to blowdry!

Hang in there and feel free to PM me if you want to chat.  Congrats on graduating nursing school!  I hope you are able to at least enjoy it somewhat.
