Saw my first surgeon

And it went pretty well. Actually really well! I liked her very much and so did my husband and dad. Her practice told me at the outset they'd be reviewing the slide to see if they agreed with the original path report (which I thought was cool - I like raising the spectre of disagreement and not just reading something and saying, OK, fine. And it was Dr. Bleiweiss at Mt. Sinai, who I think is very well thought of).

So it's a smallish, almost high grade area with some comedo  focally - less than a centimeter (the whole thing, I mean). She seemed to feel lumpectomy/radiation would take care of everything, though she really recommends an MRI to make sure there's no microinvasion going on. And she suggested a BRCA test, which I don't think I'll do, even tho I'm Jewish. There is not one case of breast or ovarian cancer in my family. I'm 51. Not that young.

Honestly, my only reservation is that she's youngish (though that's good, in a way). She's been with this practice (senior person has been in practice for 30 years) for 5 months. She's taking the board cert. thing in 6 weeks. She's not board certified, obvioulsy. Yet. I really think she'll pass. She's done 20-30 lumpectomies.

Does that sound like none at all? Or enough? She seemed very confident. Bleiweiss confirmed her treatment plan, and also said he would NOT do a sentinel node biopsy. Should I be concerned??  (Not that i want one, but if I need one....!) She did her training at John Wayne in Calif. under the guy who pioneered SNB, for what it's worth.

Guess I'll see Eleni Tisoumis tomorrow and see what she's like. Because of my family's complicated history (premature son, my own colon adventures) it's going to be hard to visit more than 2-3 doctors before wanting to just get going on this.

Oh - she's VERY big on the cosmesis of the whole thing, and she works (when nec.) with a superb Park Ave. plastic surgeon, who I know (I go to him for little things now and then and I like him). I'll visit him soonish to discuss possible reduction/lift on both sides - I haven't said it, but I am rather ample, though a smallish person. I am tempted to just live with whatever after the lumpectomy, but maybe I will do the lift and reduction.

Thanks in advance.

Jill
