Supplemental insurance

OHIP and other provincial plans are fine, but they don't cover everything.  How about some comparisons?

We have Green Shield and it has been great, they covered my Neulasta with no problem.  The pharmacy told my husband that he would have to pay for the last week of his chemo because they only paid for 4 weeks.  That was no big deal, but Green Shield checked and rechecked and said they'd pay.

 Do others have supplemental insurance and how do they like it?

mke:  I have supplemental coverage for DH and me through SunLife; however, it is through my former employer, which allows me to continue with it (out of my pocket, of course!) until age 65.  DH is over 65 so his drug costs are covered by Medicare.

So insurance covered 12 neulasta shots between each of 6 tx, and continues to cover all my drugs, dental, chiropractor etc.  No questions asked!  The only thing it didn't cover through this cancer journey was my head (meaning it didn't pay for my wigs!).

We are with SunLife too but there are differences in premiums and coverage between the  provinces. Seniors in BC are no longer automatically covered for drugs once reaching age 65 as an example. The provincial Pharmacare plan in BC has a deductable amount for everyone, whatever age, based on income, once that deductable is reached the provincial plan will cover drugs 100%.

Meanwhile SunLIfe covers drug costs until the Pharmacare deductable is reached. We are both age 65 and older and under our plan drugs are covered only for the first 80% until provincial pharmacare kicks in. I think this is a fair system though and keeps the overall costs lower.
