Primarily, I want to say thanks to all of you for the support and encouragement. I had m biopsy on the 17th and here are the results. I would like some input as to the "chronic mastitis" dx, and what you all feel should be my next step.My obgyn has set up an appointment this coming Friday with a surgeon for a second opinion. This only came to be because I was insistant on knowing why this chronic mastitis thing is not being taken seriously. So here it is:

    Final Diagnosis:

Left Breast lesion at 2 o'clock (needle core biopsy)

-The tissue is composed of cores of mostly fibrous slightly fatty breast tissue with areas of fat necrosis with areas suggestive of granulomatous mastitis

-No dysplastic or malignant cells are seen. No granulomata are noted.

-Occasional areas of ductal hyperplasia of the usual type are noted along with accompanying areas of chronic mastitis.

    -Small intraductal papilloma is seen

    Comment:

A CD-68 and pankeratin stains are performed on the tissue sections. This, along with the morphology, reveals a reactive population of histiocytes staining for CD68. Pankeratin stain with morphology are negative for the presence of malignant epithelial cells.

Note: If the clinician is concerned about the possibility of a malignant lesion due to imaging or scans or clinical history, then additional needle core biopsies or excision of the lesion may be more helpful in order to gain a better clinical-pathological correllation.

I hope you guys can help me with m decisions. Benign is good, but why am I still itching, have this lump and why is it there?? OMG this worry is such a pain in my butt. Maybe I should just let it go for a few months??? Any response is sooo appreciated.Undecided

    Thanks All!

    Beckie:

Get the second opinion also see if the slides can be sent to Mayo clinic or maybe even MD Anderson.

Don't give up until you get an answer that you feel comfortable with.  This is your body and you deserve a correct dx.

    Good Luck on Friday.

    Hugs

    Laura

    Beckie,

How many core biopsies were done?  When I was dignosed I had 3 of the breast and 3 of the palpable lymph node.  The radioligist said sometimes they will do up to 6 biospies of the breast if the specimen size does not look adequate.  Hopefully the path report is correct and everything is benign.  Good luck!
