Critical Thinking Not Fear Based

Dotti, my dear, you said a mouthful. People on both ends of the spectrum are trying to see who can yell the loudest and be the meanest, and those in the middle are just covering their ears against the din.

Remember the days when, if you read something in the newspaper, you could generally believe it?
I just read an iteresting article about Sir Harold Evans, editor of the London Sunday Times until Rupert Murdoch bought The Times. A good quote from him really stuck out: "News is whatever someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising" -- or, as seems much more prevalent today, putting the newspaper/TV/radio owner'scorporate political views across, and to he** with the news.
-
Yeah, what ever happened to journalists reporting the straight facts without bias? I thought the Op-Ed piece was for that. It would be nice if journalists would ditch their political or whatever views and just give me the facts -- I can make up my own mind on what it all means.
-
I think the downfall of reporting began with the use of adjectives in the newscast. Instead of a house fire, it became an 'raging inferno'. And a senator became the "R or D" senator.
-
PIP!!!! That is Exactly when it began!! I had been taught that in journalism there were NO adj. Never, Never, Never.
And there were no rolling eyes, lifted brows or other expressions -- Joe Friday: Just the facts mam'm.
-
Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Did I get that right? Wasn't that the mantra for journalism? Old school I am. Anything else was considered yellow journalism i.e. jaundice -- illness. What the heck happened out there? I like to think that we are simply adjusting to the rapid development of the Internet and it will all come back in balance in time.
Maybe EBM (evidence based medicine) is a natural response to the adjective generation combined with legal medicine.
Iodine--I've enjoyed your posts this morning, more than usual. I wish that I had your energy.
Best wishes to all as always,

LOL, Marilyn, not so much energy but the good drugs! (just kidding, so don't worry, I'm on the much less good ones now!)

I think I am suddenly grateful for the "5-post rule."
