Head Covering Options For Hair Loss
Comments

I've contacted several companies requesting discounts, free shipping or willingness to provide consultations for those losing their hair. Some generous companies already provide free products.
This can't grow and help others without your contributions. Please provide your comments on each of the companies if you order from them and PM me with new additions to the list.
I'm not working for any of the companies and I do not benefit financially from this.
(I am, however, suffering from empty-nest-syndrome so please allow me to distract myself while I await grandchildren that my children aren't ready to give me.)

Planet Buff is THE BOMB! I lived in those things when my hair was falling out. It was the only thing that kept me from leaving hair all over the house worse than my golden retreiver!
-
The Buff is also one of my favorites. Now that my hair is growing back I use it as a head band when I'm hiking.
-
I agree, matter of fact, my planet buff head cover is sitting right here bc I just took it off. Its the most comfortable to wear around the house, I have two and wear them all the time. They were great this summer in the heat as well bc the material wicks away sweat. The franceluxe scarves are beautiful and you get a special one free except there is an opening in the back which exposes your scalp. I told them and they shipped me a free head band to cover the area. Very nice people. Payless has cotton scarves that are really inexpensive and they look casual, hip and nice. I would wear the long scarves and tie them to the side, braiding them down the front of my outfit and you can decorate them with pretty vintage pins from antique stores. I put a pin at the tie site and got lots of compliments. Also I would put a vintage pin on the top of the scarf in the frontto give it a bias edge.

I ordered the Survivor Buff, because I'm a fan. My hair hasn't fallen out yet but it's getting kind of dry and frizzy so I've been wearing it. Lots of people ask me if I was on Survivor, he he.
I say no,but I AM a survivor.
Here is a tip I learned in the Look Good, Feel Better class. It sounds weird but looks good.
Take an old, soft tee shirt. Cut it off across, below the arms so you have a tube shape. Put the hem edge of one side against your forehead with the rest going behind you. At the nape of the neck, make a figure 8 with the two parts that come down. Twist them and roll it up around your forehead from the back. Tada, you have a turban. Cheap, looks like one you buy in the store and soft.
If I can find visuals I'll post them.

I loved the 2 wraps I got from ABonita Scarves (abonitascarf dot com). The piping around the front panel of the scarf gives the impression of fullness, and it has a D-ring and snap method of closure that prevents the scarf from slipping around. Most of them are cotton, so they are washable and they breathe--which is nice when it's too hot or I have a hot flash.

I was able to get a free wig from the American Cancer Society http://www.acs.org as well as bandanas and cotton head coverings from a local place helping cancer patients in the Capital District area of New York--I live in Albany. It's http://www.tolife.org
Feel free to go to either site and see what they have. ToLife has lots of alternatives to wigs. Give it a try if you like.

When I was in chemo last year, I found the website tznius dot com. They sell clothing to women who wish to dress modestly, but they have a great selection of scarves and instructions for how to tie them. The first time I ventured out of my house in a scarf instead of a wig, a young girl stopped me in the mall and asked me if I could tell her how I tied my scarf. She said her mother had breast cancer and she was having a really difficult time dealing with the hair loss but that my scarf looked so good she wanted to show her Mom! (I offered to take it off and show her how it was done, but she didn't think she needed that much instruction!!!)

Thanks so much for this list. I also want to let everyone know that I just received a hat package from Heavenly Hats and OMG they were amazing. I got 3 hats from them and they were high quality and are just what I needed. Reading that this organization was started by someone so young and is still continuing, I will hold my own "hat parade" in Baltimore to help support them! This is a fabulous resource.
I also wanted to add 3 others to this list that I have used and happily endorse and encourage others to contact:
www.happyheadwraps.com - I got 2 headwraps from them and they are stylish and warm and the owners of the company, Ellen and Laura and wonderful.
www.chemoangels.net - another great group
www.slumbercap.com - I got a few of their slumbercaps to see how they would work during the night as what I was using kept coming off and during the night my head would alternate between hot and cold and these worked wonderfully. I also wear them during the day and they are so comfy that I forget that I have them on.
Hope these can help as well.

Wow, what a wonderful list and I tired just imagining all the time spent researching this. I am currently receiving treatment here is Costa Rica and have been making scarves and getting donations from friends and family in the U.S. to bring to the government hospital where I receive my treatment. I am leaving tomorrow morning to work at a seminary in the southern zone of the country but when I return in a few days I am going to look into any of these that may donate. There is such a great need here for all items related to breast cancer. Thank you for all the work you have done. If you remember which ones were willing to donate new or used items please PM me as that may save me some time. God Bless, Kathy

Thank you all for the time that has gone into this list. Here is another site that I found..

Kathy....Heavenlyhats.com and FranceLuxe.com both offer free head coverings. I can't believe there aren't more companies offering this.

ReneeS, Thank you so much for the list. I will be bald in a month so I'm definitely looking around. One site I found that had some great-looking stuff is www.topsyturban.com. I haven't tried them though so I can't vouch for quality & comfort, but they look comfy.
Thanks again!

Thanks Teemee, These have some of the best prices I've seen.

I just finished my last chemo treatment and I live near Chicago (so a cold climate!). When I didn't wear a wig, I ended up wearing heavenly fleece hats from Lands End Overstocks most often over the past couple of months. They are very comfy and the price is right -- I checked in every week or so and would buy the colors available for $4.99 (the prices and available colors fluctuate).
If you register, you'll get constant emails with free shipping codes. I have also called their 800 number to request a free shipping code and have always received one. You can even get a whopping 3% back through ebates!
I have no connection with Lands End ... just thought I'd share a very reasonably priced and comfy hat option.eta: Be sure to look in overstocks! They also have the current years heavenly fleece hats in the regular section for 3x more.
-
headcovers.com was the one I used the most and I was very pleased with everything....they have lots to select from.
-
I'm not sure I saw this on the list, so forgive me if it's already mentioned. I went through chemo during summer months and found all head coverings, wigs, scarfs, etc., to be overheating. That may not apply, now, but I would still recommend the following site because the hats are very stylish, and they have winter-warming options as well. You'll almost want to wear them after your hair grows back!!! I said, almost. Anyway, here it is: www.domadesigns.com.

Laura2009-
Bless you for the tip on Land's End overstocks. I hate my wig and today I got 4 perfect hats from Land's End for less than 20 bucks with free shipping. What a great tip.

I loved the hats from headcovers, all were lovely quality affordable and you can move/shape them nicely to suit your mood or frame the face. Very flattering. I now have a full head of long hair (tri neg- ended chemo in Nov 2007, but I still like the hats enough to wear them now, and get compliments on them every time. They wash really well also, so it was great as I never used a hat but I wore their cotton knitt ones inside and out. Their winter lined caps are beautifully made also, but they can't be rolled down at the back of the neck like the roll style knitts so they were slightly less covering. Saying that, I use the knitt lined winter caps now all the time.
xx Good luck to you all.

Another idea... For anyone with long hair, I would highly recommend considering hip hats with hair www.hatswithhair.com. You can use your own hair to make a hairpiece to wear during and after chemo. That's what I did, and I can tell you that besides looking good and being easy to throw on, it is a great psychological boost to wear your own hair. I have a nice wig I wear for good (and client meetings), and hats and scarves, but my own hair (with a baseball cap or scarf) is what I use the most.
-
That's a great idea Luah. Thanks for sharing.
-
For those who sew - Mccalls has a pattern 4116 that has around 6 different styles - turban, scarf and hat. I bought over the weekend. And then went shopping for fabric that made me feel good. the shopping made me fell like I was taking control and the sewing will keep mind occupied until my chemo starts.
-
Has anyone tried the "headband wig"? I saw it on headcovers.com and was curious about it. I always were my hair in a headband or ponytail so thought this may be a good option for me.
If anyone has one, I'd appreciate your thoughts!
-
Does anyone know of a place that has the scarves that fit over your head, but have the little ties, or "tails" as I like to call them, in the back? Sometimes you can just tie a bow, but I like to tie a knot and bring it back over my head and tie another knot and twist the rest of the ties around. I'm going to a wedding soon, and I like those scarves best. Thanks!!
-
This is great thanks so much for the resource.
