Phase 1 trials - are they worth it

Options

I just came back from the Mayo clinic and they are suggesting a Phase 1 trial and I'm scared of what that means. The traditional chemo drugs have not worked for the past year and the cancer keeps progressing, so my options are running low.  I'm still pretty healthy considering liver and bone mets. Any advice on the safety of Phase 1 and are the side effects worth it. I still want to fight but begining to doubt if it's worth it.

I'm on a phase 2 trial-for PARP inhibitors for BRCA+ cancers. I felt sufficiently strongly about it, that I would have tried even had the trial been at phase 1. So far it's achieving pretty good results (I've had 8 cycles and remain stable)-which is more than some conventional chemos achieved for me. I admit I have a vested interest in this trial, being BRCA2+-as is our daughter, and more than a few family members. I felt that it may not achieve too much for me-but I'm hoping that it will translate to a very succesful treatmnet in years to come, and potentially help any of my family who may develop this dreadful disease.

As you still feel quite healthy, and as conventional chemo hasn't been working, then it might be wise to give the trial a try. Rest assured you will be very closely monitored every step of the way, and so any side effects are dealt with promptly. Good luck with your very difficult decision-if I can help at all, please ask-or feel free to pm me-I know exactly the thought processes you are going through at the moment.

Hi Barb -- I don't have an answer.  But I think you should post this question in Stage IV board so you get maximum visibility and responses.  Good luck in your decision-making and treatment.
