Middle Aged Memories

How many grew up with a World Book Encyclopedia set? (Or Britannica, or Compton's?) Were you a card-carrying member of the "Look It Up Club?"
-
No I wasn't in the club, but my family had two sets of encyclopedias as we grew up, and I had one set I bought when we were expecting our first. We had sets of small topical encyclopedias purchased at the grocery store. Kid oriented, and Presidents as I recall. Lots of pictures.
My dad read to us most nights and we got to choose the book. Many times it was an edition of the World Book, and he would choose two or three pages to read.

I was just have a major craving for sugar and then it hit me. Pixie sticks. I know they still make them. The ones I was thinking about was the giant ones that where about 3ft long and instead of a paper container it was plastic. Now that was a sugar rush if there ever was one. It was a good thing that as kids we played outside all day. Bause there were 5 of us and on a sugar rush we woulda drove my mom to the brink of madness. Awww Pixie sticks still my fav.
-
I loved the wax lips.
-
-
Awe pixie stix YUMMMMMM! Thanks NM!!!!!!!!!
-
How about Lik'm Aid?
-
Loved the Lik-m-aid. You could make a drink out of it, but who took the time when you could "mainline" the sugar straight to your mouth!!!
I remember getting Pixie Stix in my halloween bag, and it never failed that one would break open.
-
And when it did break open, I always tried to pour as much out to save it.
-
This is far removed from candy, but does anyone remember the TSS scare in the 70's and tampons were removed from store shelves?
-
Oh man all this poxie stix talk makes me wanna rush out and get them, lol. I am a huge sugar junkie.
-
Yes, Meece, I remember Toxic Shock Syndrome very well. One year at Halloween, a guy I knew dressed up with six-shooters and a bandolier, but instead of bullets he put tampons in the bullet places. He was the Toxic Shock Bandit. I had weird friends. Hee-hee.
--------------------------------------------
Haven't seen these around for a few years (especially the tiny ones.
-
There was a "Smoke Shop" down stairs from my doctor when we were little. If we weren't too ill and we had been good, sometimes Mom would let us pick a treat from the candy selection. I remember once getting a "medicine" bottle of Chiclets Tinys, and you rotated the lid to make a little opening to pop one out. They may not have been Chiclets Brand but I remember them, and how easy it was to swallow one of the tiny ones.
-
Some other candy was like that too. In fact, if you got the doctor or nurse play set, it usually came with a bottle of candy pills. Fast forward to a nation of pill-popping adults. Mmmm..candy!
-
-
I don't see the candy pills in those play sets. Maybe it was something that could be purchased separately to enhance the junior medical experience.
-
i'm thinking that when my hair gets to the point of needed a cut that i should ask my stylist for an updated Dorothy Hamill
-
You only have a chance on that if your stylist is middle-aged enough to know who that is. Tee-hee-hee.
-
I had a Toni Tennile!
-
I need hair, lol!
-
In time, Paula, in time...
-
NM, thanks for the pic of the lips! We have a place here on the beach called the Candy Kitchen and they have every penny candy known to mankind that is still made. Plus home made ice cream. Headed there later today thanks to this thread.
-
Remembering the papery flavor that went with them. Could never get all of them off without a bit of the paper backing sticking to them.
-
Barbara I remember buying those and thinking I hit the mother load of candy. It seemed like you got tons of candy and it didnt cost alot. So true Eli about the paper. No matter what ya did you got paper with them. Thanks for the memory!
-
I remember that same thing. It did make the candy linger longer.
-
alex,
and now that actor is on NCIS and he plays a medical examiner
-
just a picture of the 1st blow dryer that i used in the 70's, i still remember my hair was frizzy and out of control when I was done, BUT it was better than using the iron on the ironing board...
wholly crap wouldn't I love to have the hair the use this now....
-
I think we had the same one. It was so awkward when you clipped the comb or brush to it and tried to draw it through your hair. tr wasn't light weight either.
-
I didn't have a blow dryer until this one came out...
Before that I had the Lady Sunbeam bonnet dryer just like this...
Before that, went with the old fashioned way...
-
I still have my old Encyclopedia's and Books of Knowledge - now those are amazingly cool - they have such fantastic stuff in them!!!
When I was young I asked for my hair to be cut like Peter Tork of the Monkee's. Speaking of which they are playing a concert here on Friday! I didn't know they were still doing that.
I remember my sister ironing her hair then putting the back top part up by rolling it around a large juice can then wrapping the rest around her head like a turban with little silver clips. She looked a hoot and of course my sister and I teased her terribly but what can you expect we were 12 and 15 year's younger! I guess that was the 60's version of flat ironing - LOL!
