I'm Back. Time for my 6 mos. MRI! Yikes!

Hi to all,

It's been a while.  Long story short... Last year was diagnosed with a small focal ADH.  Was recommended to have MRI's and Mammo's alternately every 6 mos.  My mother is a breast cancer survivor.  By the way, I am 44 years old.  My first mammo since the ADH diagnosis yielded some areas of concern which lead me to an MRI which also showed some areas of concern.. I had an MRI guided biopsy and thankfully it was B9.  Now I am up for another mammo/mri in November.

I already have knots in my stomach.  I kind of felt that if I kept on this every 6 months I really would be able to keep ahead of the game.  However, as I read some of the stories on this site, it scares me how quickly things could pop up.

 Is it true that an MRI could pick up malignancies like 10 years before a mammo? I guess I am looking for some comfort before November.

I know that this is easier said than done, but my doctor said to me when my journey started, "don't borrow trouble."  In other words, try not to worry about something that hasn't happened yet.  You just keep your head up, your have already seen that these things can be b9, so just try (being the operative word)  to not worry about something until you have something to worry about.  Good luck in November and make sure you come back to talk anytime that you feel scared.  It helps to know there are people out there that know how you feel.

shabby---I know what you're feeling. I was diagnosed with LCIS 6 years ago and I also have family history of bc (mom had ILC). Are you taking tamoxifen? I finished my 5 years of tamox and now I am taking Evista for further preventative measures and continue with my high risk surviellance of alternating mammos and MRIs every 6 months. The testing and all the waiting for results does seem to get easier over time. Please email if you'd like to talk.

I'm with ya sister.  My MRI is Nov 2nd -when is yours?  It's stressful....  I have never seen anything that has said mri can pick up malignancies that far in advance.  It only "lights up" things that don't seem to belong. A biopsy is the only thing that can confirm malignancy. 

 PM me and let's go thru the journey together.  Seems like we might be on the same schedule.  Are you on tamoxifen?  I have been for 20 months with no problems initially, but recently have been having such a rough time, I feel like quitting....  Any thoughts out there?

Hi,

I know what you guys going through. I had biopsy back in May, thank God it was B9 and in November I'm duo for my 6 moths follow up(MRI).

I'm getting nervous already.

I know exactly how you are feeling. I was diagnosed July 09 with LCIS and was referred to a speicalized cancer centre in another city. I just recently had a MRI which showed an enhancement and therefore warranted a MRI guided biopsy (Oct 16/09). It was BIRAD 5 and I am terrified. So now I am on the excruciating waiting for results roller coaster until Monday Oct 26.  I have been searching high and low on different threads for a BIRAD 5 on MRI that came back with B9 and have yet to find one.

Praying for us all to get that incredible B9,

 Hi Cathy - I just wanted to provide some hope for you. Here are some abstracts about  the predictability of BI RADS 5 MRIs.

(For lesions detected only by MRI)"The malignancy rate according to the breast MRI score was 0% for score 3, 18.2% for score 4, 32.1% for score 5 and each 50% for lesions of score 6 and 7. After translation into BI-RADS the malignancy rates were 0% for BI-RADS 3, 24.6% for BI-RADS 4 and 48.5% for BI-RADS 5 lesions."http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19452398 (emphasis mine)

Hi My mri is nov 3.  i am so uptight already.  this is just the worst.  and boy does those 6 months fly!!! keep in touch.

No, its not the worst.The worst would be having breast cancer.Some perspective for you.
