"An investigation into the social dynamics of breast cancer: how the disease affects and changes concepts of female personal identity."

As a fourth and final year Sociology Honours student at the University of Edinburgh, I am required to carry out an extensive social research project which entails creating, researching, examining and evaluating a topic of my personal choice. I have selected the title given above to centre my work around.

After researching for a period of months, I will use my findings to create a 10, 000 word dissertation, which will be submitted for examination as part of my final degree.

Breast cancer is a disease that affects millions of woman worldwide, and for many of these woman, like yourself, as well as friends and family, breast cancer is a very real part of everyday life, which I believe makes it a very genuine and significant part of social life and will make for an interesting area to research and study from a sociological perspective. It is an issue which many people have been touched by, and can therefore relate to in some form.

Breast cancer has personally affected my life through the loss of a close family member to the disease, which is what I consider to be the key driving force behind my passion to conduct my research in this area. Having witnessed the affects of breast cancer, in both a physical and emotional sense, I am motivated to learn more about the social dynamics of the disease. I am interested in your opinions and personal experience of living with and comprehending breast cancer, and I am keen to uncover the reasons how and why the disease can so profoundly affect female personal identity.

If yoou think that you would like to help me with my research and are happy to speak with me about your feelings, either face to faceor online, please do not hesitate to get in touch:
