Milk Thistle

I know there are foods/herbs that we are told not to take and we don't all agree with it (I eat soy and find that as a food, it is fine, even with ER/PR positive status).

I just read that milk thistle is on the list to avoid.

Any thoughts?

I know preliminary studies show it can kill cancer cells (in vitro), but it is probably "estrogenic" and thus off the consume list....

Disscuss please............

wallycat ~ I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm curious why you want to use it.  Is it the potential benefit you mentioned?  I haven't heard of that yet, but I know Milk Thistle is commonly included in liver cleansing complexes, like the one I used after I finished chemo.  Does it have other benefits?    Deanna

Milk thistle can lower blood sugar as well....so between a cleaner liver and lower glucose, I was hoping it was great for us.

Wallycat-Are you aware that @ 85% of soy has been genetically modified? It is not the world's greatest 'healthfood' it has been marketed as. I attended a lecture on hormones last night. The doctor said milk thistle is used for detoxing. I asked her what her viewpoint was on phytoestrogens and cancer. She said flax seed is okay, but to stay away from soy because of the genetic modification of it. Who knows for sure. Doctors are limited in their knowledge. You can't assume one doctor knows all. I believe 'IT"S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!' and how much of it an individual can make, and in as short of a time as possible. I stay away from both soy and flax seed.

I have never seen milk thistle listed as estrogenic. I took it during my last 2 cycles of chemo, when my liver enzymes were out of whack, but it didn't make any difference in them. Then I started taking SAM-e and the liver enzymes normalized within a week, and I stopped feeling nauseous for the first time since starting chemo.
