I have no cancer but I chose to have an ovariectomy and a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy last year at 37. I am BRCA1 positive and lost my mother and 2 aunts to BC.

I am all confused now. I just saw a gynecologist yesterday who specialyses in menopause and she prescribed estogen and progesteron (hormonotherapy). I was told by my oncosurgeon who did my PBM that hormones were very dangerous for me.

The gyn explained that recent studies show that premenopausal women who are deprived of hormones for a number of years before menopause tend to suffer from Alzheimer, Parkinson, heart problem, immune systeme diseases at early age.

Anybody here BRCA1 and taking hormones!?

Thank you,

Claudine

I 'm BRCA1+ and am having a prophalactic double mastectomy and TVH on Oct. 27th.  I am going to have HRT.  My gyn. was very understanding about why I wanted it and said it will not be a problem.  Since I am only 30 yrs. old I did not want my body deprived of hormones.  I only want estrogen and was told by the gyn. that if I did not get testerone with the estrogen there would be no way for the tissue to shed and that that increases the risk of cervical cancer and the only way to just have estrogen would be to have a total hysterectomy instead of an oopherectomy.  Perhaps your oncosurgeon is worried about the cervical cancer risk associaled with the hormone therapy?  Also, my mother had just an oopherectomy and she is on esterol, as a hormone replacement not estrogen.  She is BRCA1 + too.  It is called soto pelle (sp?) and is supposedly safe.  She loves the way she feels on it and says she will stay on it forever.  She is 57, and has been on it one year.  It is a pellet that is inserted into your hip and lasts about 3 months before you get another one.  I hope this helps!
