Starting a new job ... ????

Hi Everyone...

Not sure where to post this so if anyone has a better idea where I should put this please let me know.

I am 6 months post chemo and almost 5 months post rads.  Still have to have my exchange surgery late October or early November.  Just found out I am loosing my job at the end of this month. So my question is... has anyone had to start a new job while still in the midst of things?  If so do you tell your new employer what is going on... that u have scheduled doctor appointments, or even an upcoming surgery?? I don't know if I should wait it out until December...even though I think I'll go nuts staying home that long!  Any advise or experience is appreciated!

Hey Sue - sorry to hear this. No advice either, but I don't think you have any legal or moral obligation to disclose medical info to a prospective employer. I would certainly start looking now if you want to. Good luck!

I agree with non-disclosure.  None of their business.  If and when you are hired, you can explaiin the need to begin the job at a certain time.  Your physical requirements will determine when you can safely return to work.

Just remember to discuss medical ins. coverage (COBRA) with your HR dept while you are on the job search.  Tough to find jobs Nov/Dec.  At least it has been the case for a lot of businesses. They are just not prepared to bring someone on at the end of the year.

Hi Sue,

 If you want to wait until December, and can afford it, you could always sign up with a local temp agency to do short term jobs. I did that in a lapse between a job and an internship, and got some interesting assignments!

Or you could find a place to volunteer to "kill some time". Local animal shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes always need smiling faces to help out.
