North York Diagnostic Centre - what to expect?

I posted under "Not diagnosed, but Worried" forum too.  Anyone with experience at North York? Mammo of lump didn't show "characteristics of BC," but further investigation required - scheduled at NY tomorrow, all afternoon. Doctor's assistant said I should know "what's what"  by end of day? Really? Would I not have to wait for biopsy report - and how long? - or can they tell right away? Confused and worried....thanks in advance.

I hope all goes well with you. I haven't heard of the NY diagnostic centre but am wondering where it is? Is it a private clinic or part of a hospital?

    Hello Luah,

Sorry you have to go through this.  You must be very worried.  I hope, for your sake, that everything will turn out okay.

It sounds like you are going to the Breast Clinic.  Probably 15-20 women will all be brought in at one time and they will circle around visiting the various specialists - mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsy and surgeon.

I was told I had cancer before my biopsy was even taken - because I remember crying that day.

I think there are two surgeons at that clinic one male and one female.  Which ever surgeon is on that day, is the one that would be your surgeon should you require surgery.  Did your gp recommend one particular surgeon?

They give you juice and cookies and make you watch a video on breast examination.  Take a good book because you will be sitting around waiting quite a bit.   They have the best equipment for mamograms - you lie on a table face down.

What I was expecting and didn't get was information about my diagnosis, support groups, online communities, coping, etc.

Make a list of your questions and write down what they tell you and remember, you don't need to make any decisions that day.  The results of the biopsy will be available in approx 1 week.

I wish you all the best tomorrow,  if you have any further questions, please let me know.

mantra: North York Breast Diagnostic Centre is part of North York General Hospital, Toronto.

molly52: Thanks for the info. I did have a mamo right after finding my lump. According to my GP, the radiologist (whom he knows and trusts as being "very good")  said it did not have the characteristics of breast cancer, but there was asymmetry that required further investigation. I'm guessing U/S and biopsy today... hoping for good news, but for a post menopausal woman (with family history), it seems much more likely to be BC. Thanks again for giving me a picture of what to expect!

Danjes, sorry I don't come to this board very often and just saw your post now.  My experience has been very good. I've sent you a PM.
