Lactose Intolerant, any suggestions?

Hey ladies,

I am lactose intolerant and have used soy for years.  No one has told me not to use it, but I have seen several postings saying not to use soy.  I would love to know what others in my situation have done.  I have used lactaid type products but they don't always seem to work, so I would love to have your input.  I would also just like more information on why soy is so bad.

Thanks,

Susan

I'll let others chime in as to why soy can be a problem for women with ER+ bc, but I wanted to address the question of lactose intolerance itself.  I, too, have been highly lactose intolerate for many years.  I couldn't even tolerate a small amount of butter as an ingredient in something I ate without a strong reaction.  (Stomach/intestinal cramps, diarhea, gas, general misery for 12-24 hours.)  Yikes!  Lactaid and that sort of stuff didn't do much, as far as I could tell.  I did get really good at alternatives to milk products:  rice or almond milk, rice dream ice cream, goat milk yogurt and cheese (for whatever reason, goat milk didn't bother me.  dunno why).  Those all worked pretty well.  But then I was told about a product called "Digestive Advantage" (they make several formulas - I use the one for lactose intolerance).  It's a modified form of acidolphilous.  You take it once a day, and it takes up residence in your gut and deals with the lactose.  I was very hesitant to even try it, but it works.  It REALLY works.  I still don't eat tons of milk products most of the time (avoiding saturated fat and all that), but if I do (even pizza or ice cream), I don't get sick.  At all.  I hate to sound like an advertisement, but the stuff works.  I've got my mom and a couple of other friends on it now, too, all with the same results.  It probably doesn't work for everyone, but for those it does work for, it's just about a miracle.  Anyway, some drug stores carry it (usually near the Lactaid), or you can get it online.  I usually shop around for the best deal online and buy a bunch at a time.

    I hope that's helpful.

Thank you Linda, I will look for that product.  It would be a real blessing not to have to deal with the whole lactose intolerant thing.  I am not as intolerant as it sound like you are, but it can still be a pain (literally at times).  I have been intolerant for most of my adult life, so this new product will be great if it works for me.  One of my daughters is intolerant too, so I will try it on her too.

    Thanks for the help,

    Susan
