Diagnosis- question about fibroadenoma vs. malignant tumor

    Hello,

I had a breast ultrasound last week for what my pcp thought was a cyst. It is definitely a tumor, and the radiologist reviewed the ultrasound and sent the tech back in to tell me it was probably a benign fibrodenoma and the usual treatment would be to wait and follow up with another ultrasound in 6months.  NOT AN ACCEPTABLE PLAN FOR ME.

I am very high risk, both my mother and her mother were diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age. My mom was 43-44, and her mother was even younger than that, and her cancer was terminal. She died in her late 30s. I am 29. My primary care doc, who ordered the ultrasound, said that she wanted me to see a breast surgeon for follow-up because of the family history.

I have the appointment with the breast surgeon tomorrow, and I am kind of scared and not sure what to expect. This is all happening very fast- the ultrasound was the day after my doc felt the lump, several months after I felt it, and that was only a week and a half ago.

Is there anyone else out there who had a biopsy reveal cancer after initially being told it was probably benign?  And did anyone have a fibroadenoma become cancer later? Has anyone ever had one removed?

     Thanks,

    Katie

Hi, I found a lump while breastfeeding my baby.  The doctor who read the mammogram had me also do an ultrasound.  She told me she thought it was only a fibroadenoma (which tend to grow during pregnancy and breastfeeding) but she couldn't be 100% sure without a biospy.  She offered me the biopsy right then and there.  It came back malignant, grade 3.  And I don't have any history of breast cancer in my family!  I would stand up for your right to get the lump biopsied.  That way you will have peace of mind.  Age means nothing.  Look at the ages of all the women here on this site.  There are lots of young moms that weren't even old enough to think about having a mammogram yet!  A lump should be treated very seriously until proven otherwise!
