antioxidants + free radicals & cancer

We hear so much about eating foods with antioxidants to improve our health & wellbeing. It is my understanding that antioxidants protect cells from free radicals. Cells damaged by free radicals can develop cancer. Is this correct?
I've seen conflicting reports about the benefits of antioxidants so I'm confused about their benefits. One article mentioned that antioxidants interfere with our AI meds? Does anyone have any information on antioxidants interferring with AIs?
