PS in NYC

I am looking for "artistry" in a PS _ once the cancer is scraped away - does anyone have any info on 2 docs at sloan and 2 docs at Cornell?? Sloan:Babet Mehrara, and Peter Cordiero versus Cornell: Lloyd Gayle and Greg LaTrenta. I wonder about the trade off between expertise and accessibility once the surgery is complete and you are in recovery mode??
-
Have you looked into Joe Disa at MSK? I've seen his work (up close and personal on a friend), and he is amazing! If I had gone the recon route, he would definitely have been my choice. But he was also very straightforward about my options: I'm thin and was a candidate for autologous transplant only since I'd had radiation earlier, and he warned me that my "breast mounds" would be "modest." I really appreciated his candor.
-
I have seen his name associated with sloan - but never a recco or personal info on him - i am now finding out that once you see one surgeon at sloan for a consult, you are not allowed to see any other surgeons for a second opinion - it is one of the most ridiculous policies i have ever heard of - they believe that one doctor is interchangeable for the next!!!!
-
I've heard good things about Dr. Mehrara--someone on this site had her DIEP flap with him previously and just used him again for her TUG (momtogreyhounds). You should do a search and you'll find the posts. You might also want to post this in the breast reconstruction forum.
-
I also have heard good things about Peter Cordiero, though didn't meet him and haven't seen his handiwork. He was one of two (the other being Joe Disa) recommended to me when I was considering this option.
-
FYI:
Don't know anything about these above docs mentioned, but if you are interested in DIEP reconstruction in NYC, you may also wish to consider Bob Allen as another highly recommended micro vascular plastic surgeon who only performs flap procedures. An outstanding artist with skin and/or nipple sparing gland resections.

Has anyone had any experience with Lloyd Gayle at Cornell for unilateral implant and other side lift?
-
Dear Biscuit,
I had prophylactic bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and immediate expander reconstruction with implants done by G. LaTrenta from Cornell. I did have one revision to correct my size, but now that I'm finished, nipples and areola grafts and all, I can say I am very happy with my size, shape and overall appearance. I am a very picky person and rather superficial when it comes to appearance- and I'm happy- that says a lot!

Thanks emma - i did consult with him - he seemed like he promised everything and i wasn't sure of what he would be doing in the end - it made me feel a bit unsure. who was the bs that worked with him?? And had you met with any other ps's for consults?? Thanks!
-
Dear biscuit,
I sent you a PM which you've probably seen by now. It explains it all and why I never ended up looking further. Also, even though I've had all my surgery in NY, I live in London and I wasn't really able to explore every option. I probably would have done in your situation. Good luck.

Biscuit,
Dr. Peter Cordeiro is my ps, and so far I am very happy with him. I haven't had my exchange surgery yet (January), but my TEs look good (as good as they can). Both Dr. Cordeiro and one of his nurses said that my body responded well to the TEs, and hopefully that will cary over to the final implants.
-
Tougher than I thought _ thanks - i had had a consult with Babak Mehrara at Sloan and then found out about Cordiero. Apparently, at Sloan, once you see one dr, you're not allowed to see any others - it is ridiculous but lucky for you - i heard he is good.
I am now considering Mark Sultan at St Lukes - I haven't found too many people who have used him - i would love to hear from some if any are out there!
-
I know several women who have used Dr. Sultan--2 for lat flaps and one for TRAM. They had their surgery with him years ago. He has a great reputation. You might want to check out how he handles the financial/insurance end of things though. I'm sending you a PM.

Sis used Mehrara at Sloan for TE after unilateral mastectomy. Still fresh post op with drains - plan to expand prior to rads then exchange in 6-12 months. He was very nice and took time with us to explain. He takes her insurance too so thats a load off as well. Staff was very nice. Post op they checked on her and call regularly for updates. So far so good. Good luck

At the moment, I'm at Columbia. I was thinking about DIEP and my BS recommended Dr Christine Rohde but I haven't met her yet, and haven't heard anything about her. She seems young but has an impressive bio, I'm wondering if anyone's had experience w/her.
Before we spoke about DIEP my BS had recommended me to Dr. Jeffrey Ascherman (also in Columbia's PS practice). I'd heard good things about him. No idea where I'll end up, with who or with what.
-
I am three weeks out from a unilateral mx and so far so good - healing nicely on the mx side and already going for a first fill, (filled at surgery to 180 cc) and going for 30 cc tomorrow. Had a mastopexy on healthy side - also looks great -- went with Mark Sultan at Roosevelt in NYC and while he has a somewhat abrupt bedside manner - it is only because he sees his results are good - and nothing to fret about - so until i have real problems, I have no complaints. I am giving him latitude because I dont think you can tell till much farther down the road!
-
If you are interested in DIEP consider Dr. Keller ay LIJ. He has done over 1000 which is more than anyone. He also does a CT angiogram before so he can map your vessels. Not too many are doing this and it cuts down on surprises a lot.
-
You've got Robert (Bob) Allen MD in NYC. He is the person who intially started doing the DIEP and other muscle sparing flaps and has trained most of the top surgeons in the country who are proficient at these procedures.
-
I saw Dr. Cordeiro at MSK, I really like him. Unfortunately he wasn't available for quite some time as my breast surgeon Dr. Sclafani (love her) only does surgery on Mon and Tues. I was then referred to Dr. McCarthy (female). She is young (early 40's), but I felt very comfortable with her. So far my TE's are in and I guess I look as good as can be expected. I have my first fill tomorrow. I really did want Cordeiro but it didn't work out that way. He seemed very knowledgable and really explained things well. Good luck to you ~

I just saw Dr. Christine Rohde at Columbia and was not impressed. I felt very pressured to have the TE reconstruction . She really wasn't willing to discuss anything else. Also gave me very little options for implants. Thinking of going to MSK

dtad - I saw Oren Lerman at Lenox Hill last week for a revision consult. I thought he was great. Was able to tell my what my probelm was right away where two other PS from NS-LIJ were not. Spent 1 1/2 hours with me going over every option in detail. Right now he's the front runner. I'm aslo going to Weil Cornell and NYU next week for a consult..
-
I used Dr. Friedman in NYC, he listened. He gave me the result I asked for. You can see my flat result in the following posts.
-
I would highly suggest talking to a PS that does the DIEP flap. There are many other options other than implants for many women. Although you feel the need to do something very quickly, don't be rushed into a decision, most women have time to research all surgical options out there.
-
Had my final revision consult with Mihye Choi of NYU. I obviusly saved the best for last. Right now her and Oren Lerman of Lenox Hill are neck and neck as to who will do my revision. They basically both had the same opinion on what would work best for me.
