Question About Fish Oil
I have been on Lipitor for many years, but I have to stop it now because my liver enzymes are increasing on chemo. My GP suggested fish oil, but said that some people have a problem of "fish burps" while on it. I read awhile back about a brand of fish oil that did not cause the fish burps, but of course cannot remember the name. Does anyone know the name of the brand I should get? Also, has anyone had good results from fish oil in lowering cholesterol? Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda:
The brand I take is by HealthBalance -- Omega-3 (EPA400 and DHA200) -- with absolutely NO fish burps!!! These are softgels, and enteric-coated, and I purchase them at Costco, very reasonably priced. I take 3 a day, primarily to relieve the aches/pains of Femara. Will be having my cholesterol levels checked again in September, so I'll know if the Omega 3 is having a beneficial effect.
Hope this helps!

I know when I bought them at the health food store, I never had any problem. Then one time I was in a hurry and bought a cheap bottle at the drug store and I had NEVER experienced anything like those awful fish burps. It was horrendous - and totally surprised me. I went back to the health food store and the owner told me that there IS a difference and the cheaper brands are processed differently (or something like that) and not to use them. I bought another bottle from him and never had the problem again. Of course I don't know the specific reasons or what to look for on the label, but you could go to a health food store where the staff is informed (not just a chain with kids working at it) and maybe get some direction.
Those burps were brutal!

Hi Linda,
I was on Zocor when i was DX and my liver enzymes were also increased during chemo but my DR said when your treatment is over it should go back to normal again. And it did.
Best Wishes

Linda,
You might want to look at this research. They actually used humans as their subjects. It's natural too, anthocyanins comes from strawberries, and such:
I use coromega packets for omega 3. Their orange flavor is darn tasty.
I went to look to see if I could find any company offering anthocyanins in pill form, not too much luck. What good is this research when they don't have products to sell us.
I went through the same thing with organic apple extract. Can't be found but the research was darn good for us.
Ok, I found a product that has 200 mgs per teaspoon of anthocyanins.

Now on to finding organic apple extract. Probably it's not out there.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I found some at Walmart at a decent price... it is the enteric coated Omega 3 and it claims no fishy aftertaste. We'll see...... Linda

Try Nature Made Omega-3 Fish Oil....I never get 'fish burps' with this. Jah bless.

nanalinda, that's the one I take -- no fishy burps!!!

Does anybody know if Whole Foods "molecularly distilled from cold water fish" is a good fish oil? After I bought it, I started reading that it's important to get a good quality one.

I am also concerned about the mercury in fish oil. If you go to vitacost, I take the carlsons brand because it's more pure and it has tons of positive reviews.

Beyond the over the counter fish oil, there is a prescription strength fish oil supplement called Lovaza. My husband's cardiologist prescribed it for him this year to try to bring his tri's down. He has a family history of very high triglycerides. No fish burps and has been somewhat effective with the triglycerides.

I bought a brand called Garden of Life at the Health Food store and they have healthy hormones in them. When I was concerned, I looked up the 2 plant based hormones and the ashwangada (sp?)has been shown to eliminate breast cancer in a study by Sloan Kettering.
I don't burp the fish oil, but will try the freezer method, just because of the initial smell.
Also, you can take red yeast rice for cholestral. The omegas I think work more on the tryglcerides.
