Boniva side effects

I have been taking Boniva for 3-4 months. The last 2 months right after taking Boniva I have been feeling extremely tired and fatigued.  No energy whatsoever which is unusual for me.  Lots of aches in my legs and joints. after a few days it goes away.  At first I thought it was because I was doing a lot of exercising but it finally dawned on me that my fatigue & aches and pains start right after I take Boniva. Has anyone else had this problem??

    Hi mawhinney,

I'm not on Boniva, but I'm on Zometa, which is similar.  I also have the aches, and my onc told me to expect that, but that it is more from the bone density loss than the meds.  The aches in my bones that don't stay around long I attribute to the Zometa and I'm on Arimidex, too.

I don't know if they told you about the importance of dental hygiene when on the biophosphates, but you should definitely tell your dentist that you are taking it, as it will change the way he treats your dental problems.  I am going through that right now, and it's a lot more expensive.  Wish I would have known before I started the Zometa.

Sending pain free vibes your way!Smile

TXBadboob ~ What does you dentist do differently now that your are taking a biophosphate? Do you need to take an antibiotic even for routine cleaning?

I've been taking Boniva for several years now and have had no problems whatsoever.  But while we're on the topic of dentists, I would urge anyone scheduled for chemo to visit your dentist prior to starting,   I also had radiation and he saw me every three weeks throughout that treatment just to make sure all was OK.  He didn't charge me a thing, bless his heart!

Sorry I didn't get back to this!  My periodontist is doing laser tx on me. He says it is the only safe tx for someone on Zometa because of the chance of getting jaw necrosis, which is a minor SE of Zometa and other biophosphates.  He didn't put me on an antibiotic last time, but I will ask him if he will for the next, just to be on the safe side.  If you look up jaw necrosis, it is the most horrible thing I have seen, so I am scared of this as I have had dental problems in the past.  I'm not trying to scare you, but keep your dentist informed.

kane, thanks, that makes me feel better.  My regular dentist kept up with me through chemo, too, which I really appreciated.
