Hugs Cheryl.....As a double mast gal with immediate TRAM I can tell you you will be sore..And that is an understatement.....Please remember no heavy lifting...Coffe cup weight only for a good month or more.......Do arm exercises as per the doctor's orders......Make sure you have someone with you at all times in case you trip or fall.....I actually fell over my DD's suitcase and thought I had really hurt myself......You will want to sleep alot cause for every hour you are under it takes a month to recuperate from anesthesia........Good luck tomorrow and I will think of you tomorrow......

Cheryl -- I will be praying for you. Our dx sound similar with lots of DCIS and some invasive. Do you know yet about nodes ... or is that being done with BMX on Friday? Are you having reconstruction?

My dx took about 2-1/2 months to get to (mammos, needle biopsy, mri and lumpectomy since May) but finally on July 21 got dx of 5cm of mixed LCIS and DCIS extending to multiple edges, as well as 4 mm of invasive. I'm having BMX ... but I'm still meeting with PSs to decide on recon -- whether to go implants or DIEP. I expect my surgery will be in Sept.

Best wishes and hugs to you -- I'll be watching for good news and a nice recovery!

I had bilat MX with Tissue expanders last month. It was no piece of cake for me because the pain medicine they originally gave did not work well for me. Once they were able to manage my pain recovery was bearable. You will feel sore and some discomfort from the drains. They were my biggest complaints. You might also feel very numb in the chest area and possibly in the arm pits. Make sure you get tons of rest. Recovery gets a ton easier after the drains are taken out. Good Luck with surgery. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Cheryl, don't know if you are having reconstruction--I didn't but I had bilat and port put in.  I had modified radical and nodes removed on the left; mostly was numb, not much pain at all.  Watch for infection and keep the sites clean, disinfect everything.  It was not as difficult as I expected.  They kept me two nights because I had a problem with bp dropping  but I'd have been okay to go home the next day, I think.

    Good luck to you.

Hi Cheryl! I had my bilateral mx with immed expander recon on June 30.  I was in the hospital two nights and was able to shower there the day after surgery (with assistance).  I did not have unbearable pain and the morphine and valium that they gave me in the hospital did the trick to keep it under control.  You will be sore, feel tight, and will most likely be numb in some areas.  The drains are a pain and you will celebrate when you get them out.  I had one on each side taken out the week after surgery and then the other two the week after that.  I am now almost a month out and for the last two weeks I have been getting around normally and no longer notice the expanders as much.  It is amazing how the body heals and get used to the new normal much quicker than we do mentally.  You may hear some horror stories from women that did not have a good experience for whatever reason but I can tell you that I did and felt great and was so RELIEVED to have the breasts gone.  I already like my new ones and they are no where near done.  Most every one I know that has been through it came through beautifully.  One thing I did that helped at home is I bought one of those pillows that have arms and a back )maybe called dorm pillows?) at Target to sleep propped up on because for about a week and a half or two weeks you will not be able to lie flat.  Some women sleep in recliner chairs but the pillow allowed me to sleep in my own bed with my husband.  You will need help getting showered, dressed, out of bed, etc. for about a week and a half but do get up and walk and push yourself slowly towards doing normal things.  Gentle hugs(the only kind you will want for a little while) and best of luck.  I am sending prayers your way! Relax and enjoy the pain meds for awhile!
