Seeking Hope
I am currently 29 years old (will be turning 30 July 25th) and was diagnosed with IDC insitu on June 10th, 2009. The tumor size was 2.1cm and I tested positive for the BRAC 2. I just had a lumpectomy today with a sentinal lymph node biopsy that tested negative (thank you Jesus!). I have no children at this present time however it is EXTREMELY important to my husband and I to have children and have them soon. I'm looking for anyone who has a similar case to mine who has NOT received chemo just radiation or someone who has had a low dose of chemo that did not lose their hair or their period. Please does anyone have any advice they can give me?

Gentle hugs love.....SO sorry you are going through this.......I have no words of advice on your siruation as I am older (45) and have a different diagnosis but I just wanted to come here and give you encouragement.........No two people with bc are the same....Have you spoken to your oncologist about your wishes?......Best wishes to you and I will be thinking of you......And remember there is ALWAYS hope!..............

I'm not 100% sure, but it doesn't look like I'll have chemo. My diagnosis was different than yours, but my oncologist said that he didn't think it was going to be profoundly helpful. You might ask yours about the Oncotype test (that's what we're watiting on before making the final decision.)
I will say, though, that lots of women here have gone through chemo and have managed wonderfully. From what I understand, the medical community has managed to cut down on a lot of the really troubling side effects. I did ask my oncologist about "chemo light" and he said that's not the way it works (at least in my situation).
Go in with an open mind and know that you have the most researched disease in the country with the best medical care in the world. My other advice is to not look too far ahead. Take each treatment, test, etc. as it comes, with lots of prayer for strength and courage.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I had a friend who did chemo TAC I think, and rads and is now pregnant with her 2nd child. Her first was conceived after chemo also. Of course, she went against doctor's orders and stopped taking tamoxifen to get pregnant, but that was her choice. Chemo doesn't necessarily end your chances of having children but not fighting hard enough might. Make your decisions based upon what is best for you and your health. You can save your eggs...adopt...have children the old fashioned way as long as you're here to do it!

Unfortunately, with your diagnosis, I suspect that chemotherapy is really required for you. BUT, chemo is not likely to affect your fertility once you complete treatment.
Two web sites that will be of help for you are: http://www.facingourrisk.org/ for BRCA + ladies, and youngsurvival.org - which is the young survival coalition, and many of those women have faced exactly the situation that you are in now, and are now well and have families.
I'm really sorry that you have to deal with this - I know that it must be very frightening.
