Books to read while recovering
OK, what are you reading. I am not looking for books about BC or inspirational recovery stories. I'm looking for escapist literature. Chick flic type stuff. Funny stuff. Things that can be read in spurts (There are times that I can only deal with a page or two) and still make sense. Most of all I want things that are funny - a good laugh is needed while dealing with this.

I had trouble concentrating on reading for several weeks after surgery. I am an avid reader so it really bothered me. A friend brought by some audio books. It was a little easier to concentrate on listening. The one I enjoyed the most was Big Russ & Me by Tim Russert. Have you read Marley & Me? I laughed out loud while reading it. The movie was cute, but the book even better. I keep a list of everything I read. Since surgery I keep misplacing things. I think I had brain cells in my breasts. If I can find the list, I will send more suggestions.

This isn't funny but a really terrific book is Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. Won the Pulitzer this year. Fabulous, sometimes heartwrenching, literature. Short stories all about Olive. I am reading it and am in awe. It will take you outside yourself.
If you like funny, try Confederacy of Dunces. It's old, about NOLA, very warped and funny.
If you like satire and old novels, try the Lucia novels by E.F.Benson. Written between the two world wars.
I hate chick lit so have no recs on that.

Dear PTC,
OK - ditto on "Cancer made me a shallower person' - lots of things hit home and made me laugh out loud. Also, "I'd rather do chemo than clean out the garage' was pretty good and humorous.
All of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich - sort of risque, heroine is bounty hunter, torn between two men, has a family (especially her grandmother) that is a hoot - pretty quick read - I can finish one in two to three hours if I read straight through, easy to pick up and put down.
I am getting started on the Twilight series - but haven't yet, just have bought the books, haven't started reading -
I also really like W.E.B. Griffin - his Men in Blue series is great (I have actually read all of his series), but the Men in Blue series is about Philadelphia PD and main character is Matt Payne - very very rich, UPenn honor grad who joins the police department, mix of high society and police action, lots of off-the-wall characters, and pretty entertaining. In WEB Griffin's books, the main character is always filthy, stinking rich, and flaunts it - for example, Payne drives a Porsche, which he obviously can't afford on the salary of a new graduate from the police academy. Griffin also has series about the Marines, the Army, the OSS, the OSS operating in Argentina (during period before Peron), the Air Force, etc.
Have fun,
Becky

I just finished Eat Pray Love and really liked it. Humorous yet thoughtful exploration of a woman's journey through 3 countries and what she learned from each place. I'm not describing it well but it a great read about how she turned her life around...
I will have to find the Cancer made me a shallower person...
