Breast Cancer Metastes

Options

My Daughter was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 2 yrs ago. She had chemo and Radiation they did a lumpectomy. About a 6 wks ago they did a chest xray and found a nodule then about two weeks after that the did a mamogram and spotted somethng in her breast. Last Monday she had a catscan of her chest and then the Dr Scheduled her for a petscan.

she was then told to pick up her catscan and take ti to the petscan. So she picked it up and read what was in there. It said she had a nodule that was 1.3mm by 1.6mm they compared to the first one that was done about 6wks prior and that one was 0.6 and 0.6 the results say it is a metastisis or could have been caused by chemo. She finished the chemo 1and a half years ago. What are the chances this is not a reaccurance of the breast cancer. I am about to lose a grip here. She has already been through so much. YOu expect this to happen to you but not your daughter. We get the petscan tomorrow.  Thanks for any advice or words you can give me on this

Thanks
Sandy Mother of Tammie

Dear Sandy:  I am so sorry your daughter is going through this.  As a mother of two adult daughters, I know this would be so much harder on me if they were to go through it.  I wish you the best of luck on her pet scan... the waiting for the result is the hardest part.  Please keep us informed of her results.  We will be praying for good news for Tammie.  If it is mets; a mother's hug will be the most comfort to her.  Then it will help her very much to have her mother help her through her battle.  Best of luck.  Linda

    Hi Sandy,

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you re. her diagnosis.  I just wanted to send you a hug online to say I am hoping for the best for your daughter.

As a daughter with BC, a very big concern to me is my Mom being upset and sad -- I know it is awful for a Mom to have a sick child no matter what the age.  Your daughter is probably as worried about you being upset/sad as you are about her.  I think your daughter will draw a lot of strength from your love, being there for her -- nothing is stronger than a Mom's love.  This may sound sucky, but it's true -- nothing is more comforting that a Mom.

I know this isn't much info for you, but I just want to say I care about you and your daughter, what you both are going through.  I hope Tammie gets good news from her PET.

    Hi All,

I was diagonsed with breast cancer metastes in my bone.  My ON says it is in my hip area and a few spots on my spine. He put me on Tamoxifen with a monthly dose of Zometa.  It has not spread to the liver, lungs, heart etc. he says.  Does anyone think this the the right treatment for me and what it the prognosis for me. (in years)  The thing is that I don't have any pain anywhere.

my best friend has bone mets and is on similar treatment.  Because she's post menopausal, she's on AI's instead of Tamoxifen, but same general idea.  Less side effects than chemo.  She's been on it for 4 months so far, and some of the sites have shrunk, and none of the sites have progressed.   Prognosis is a tricky thing.  There are folks who have been stage 4 for a very long time.  Don't give up hope!

Your message was so similar to my experience it's spooky! My name is also "Sandy" and my beautiful 40 year old daughter was just diagnosed with a recurrence. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in 2006 and had aggressive chemo which was very difficult for her... she had to be hospitalized several times for severe dehydration and other side effects. But at the time we were convinced that that they had gotten everything and she would have clear sailing ahead. This new development is devastating because they have found it in her bones and liver. It is definitely a recurrence of the breast cancer and not a "new primary" cancer in the liver which is relatively good news. She has had 3 new chemo treatments (taxol + another drug). This time she developed a staph infection in her medi-port and had to have it removed, and was hospitalized for 4 days. She is OK now and has just had a new port inserted. Her breast cancer is unique in that it was a result of radiation she received 20 years earlier for Hodgkins disease (research has since discovered that this is not uncommon in women who received radiation for Hodgkins). At  any rate, she can never have radiation again because she had the maximum amount she can have in a lifetime. She was on Tamoxifen at the time of the recurrence. They will treat it for 3 mos. with chemo, then do another PET scan to determine next steps. It is so frustrating because they cannot predict an "end" and this could go on for many months. She is already starting to lose her hair again, further adding insult to injury. She has a wonderful 13 year old son who is very supportive, as is her boyfriend (who fell in love with her while she was bald from her last chemo). I would like to learn more about the outlook for recurrences in the bones and liver. She has been experiencing a good deal of pain in her back and hips. She is also very anemic right now. I want to be able to support her in any way I can. My heart is breaking because she has already been through more than any young woman should have to.
