Stem Cell Transplants/Skin Mets

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with IBC last year went through treatment successfully (ACT, Mastectomy& Radiation) In March I started taxotere & avastin and my cancer came back in the form of skin mets. It has not spread anywhere else and now I'm back on chemo (Carbo & Taxol) I went to MDA for a second opinion and they feel my best bet is to do a stem cell transplant. Has anyone done this? I'm a little overwhelmed because the doctor said that even if this chemo clears it up he feels it will definitely come back. I would love some input from anyone who has undergone stem cell transplant or has dealt with skin mets successfully.

Thanks

Dorothy

I will be very interested to read this reply too.

I have skin mets which are being 'held' at the moment. They have progressed twice. I am currently on extemestane and herceptin and am being treated at the Royal Marsden In London. There has been no mention of a stem cell transplant, I don't think it is used over here at all.

I was told at my local cancer research center (top 10) by the head of breast cancer surgery that stem cell does not work on soft tissue disease?  He said they have been doing stem cell for five years and every lady with chest wall disease of any kind. (meaning ibc or nodes in chest wall) they had a recurrence in last than two years???  I know one of my buddy here online with ibc was going to do a trial at John Hopkins for a new kind of stem cell and the trial got dropped before she could get in it.  I've been thinking about this also.

dofar where are you that they are even talking about this? I was told no by seven different oncologist. Two of them at MD Anderson.  Let us know what you find out.

Be careful of MDA if they need bodies for a trial they will tell you anything. I know this because they put be through a horrible trial that Germany already new five years earlier that there was no value in this treatment.  Search to see if any trials have been completed for this. Go to clinicaltrials.gov and search skin/stem cell and than look for trial results.

I hope it is the new kind of stem cell that is not so horriable to do.

    Hi Florida Lady,

Thank you for your reply. I am currently treating with a private oncologist in Connecticut. When I had the recuurrence she referred me down to MDA for a second opinion. I think that she is concerned about how to treat me going forward.(I am also tn) The skin mets showed up while I was doing a course of taxotere & avastin. I just has my second of 6 carbo & taxol for the skin mets and it has already improved. The doctor down at MDA said that even if it clears up on chemo that it will be back and I should seriously consider the stem cell. I saw Dr. Ueno at MDA last week. I'm really nervous about the whole thing!

    Thanks

    Dorothy
