I'm wondering if anyone that had IBC initailly started out with a rash that the doctor may have thought was ringworm at first.

With IBC everyone has different symptoms. I would not be suprised if your doctor thought it was ringworm. There are so many doctors out there that have never heard of or seen IBC. The only way to get a correct dx of IBC is through a biopsy. The biopsy must include skin of the area where the rash is at. The sooner you get the correct dx the faster you can start treatment.
I would get back into see your pcp or get a second opinion as soon as possible.

i am seeing surgeon today. would they do the biopsy or would i have to see a dermatologist? i'm so new at this i have no idea. thank you.

Hi - You need to ask for a punch biopsy. It's really the only reliable way for a pathologist to read the tissue sample and relate it to IBC. The surgeon can accomplish this in his office if he has a procedure room. No big deal, they'll give you enough local anes. that you shouldn't feel a thing.
Good luck and think positive thoughts!

So I went to the doctor and let me tell you i was not impressed at all. He acted like he knew about bc but really didn't do much for me. He gave me yet another cream for this rash and wants to see me in two weeks. My main concern is the pain, and this lopsided breast i have but that didn't seem important to him at all. I will try this cream and hope it clears up and goes away. Could it be that this infection/rash is causing the pain too? maybe?? is it natural to become lopsided as we age?? I really hope to get some relief soon.
Thank you to all of you who share your stories and allow us to learn from your knowledge.

Doctors drive me crazy! I would get a second opinion. It is possible that is an infection but I would still request a punch biopsy to make sure.

Hello
First let me say that I do not have bc. At the end of last year I awoke one morning with a rash on my left breast. Soon to follow was severe pain and burning with some inflamation of the breast itself. I went to see a breast surgeon and had a mammo and ultrasound. Both were clear. Long story short....the rash was actually a yeast infection. I've never heard of that on the breast. The topical cleared the reash and as it cleared and resolved, so did the pain and burning.
Hope this gives you a tiny bit of piece of mind. But if you're not satisfied with what you're being told, please get another opinion.

Great info. Was this topical a steroid? I believe that is what he gave me. i'm crossing my fingers for some good news and better results.

I had a rash a couple of months ago that looked very suspicious (orange peel) and itchy. I went to see my ONC and he felt that I should first see a dermatologist right away. He got me an appointment the same day. The dermatologist thought that it looked like contact dermatitis and prescribed a steriod called Clobetasol Propionate. I was told that if is was contact derm then the steriod should take care of it within a few days. By the third day my rash was much improved. And by the end of the week almost gone. If you are prescribed an oinment and don't see an improvement w/i a few days request the punch biopsy. Hope this helps and good luck.

Another opinion here. Get the punch biopsy or better yet, a PET scan, as soon as possible. If it's nothing, wonderful.
An ultrasound and mammogram DO NOT show IBC. Also IBC is often left untreated for so long that it is not caught until Stage IV. If the rash has not disappeared, get it checked correctly. Do not be shy, this isn't the time.
More than likely it's nothing, but find out for sure. Best of luck to you.

what exactly is this PET scan? I don't know what that is.

rachelmf:
A PET Scan is similar to an MRI machine but much more advanced.

Hi all. So i have been using my cream and the rash is almost all gone now thank goodness, but it's so itchy still. i was beginning to think it might really be that yeast infection someone commented on. Did yours come back right away?
