Hi,

I'm due to start the procedure of freezing my embryo's within the next day or so. I'm very worried about the slight increase in risk of Ovarian Cancer.

My Oncologist origininally said that if I have a child after Chemo, they may need to remove my ovaries afterwards (because they also think the Cancer is genetic).

I want a child so badly (due to get married in a few weeks) and we were due to start trying for a baby around now. My issue is that I'm so afraid going through the freezing procedure will retrigger the Cancer.  Am I being a bit over the top?

Thanks

Paulsgirl

    Hi Paulsgirl,

I am 29, and was diagnosed with invasive tubular ductal carcinoma in Feb 09. My husband and I were just about to try and start our family when I was diagnosed. I chose to have bilateral mastectomies and am currently undergoing reconstruction. B/C of the adjuvant therapy needed ie chemo and hormonal therapy, we chose to bank embryos. This month, we have just banked 8 "frosties" as my husband lovingly calls them! We only had one months "cycle" to harvest the eggs, so I was only exposed to 2 weeks of the hormone injections. My oncologist said, "Yes, there is potentially a risk to the high amount of hormonal exposure needed for the egg maturation procedure, but that it was worth the risks." She wanted me only to do the reproductive stuff after I had my surgery, but before adjuvant therapy... Chemo then hormonal therapy. My reproductive specalist gave me a medication called Femara right after my harvest to plumit my hormone level. My husband and I felt the benefits were worth the risks, and the procedure was certinally OKed by my oncologist. Hope that helps... Good Luck!

Wow, my situation was almost the exact same as kelly29, my husband (who was my fiance at the time) and I froze 9 embryos, and I had hormone injections for about 3 weeks.  I was at risk, but they did a regimen that was a lower dose of hormones (if that makes sense).  I'm now finished with all treatment and I'm on Tamoxifen.  Haven't had any problems!
