Some straight people think we appreciate their gay jokes/slurs?  I can't tell you how many times one of my 45 year former classmates posts something about "thesbians har har har" or something else equally UNfunny on my facebook page after I make some comment about LGBT rights. If the person is nice I send them a private message explaining that I know they meant no harm. If I have the energy i do the same for the seminice folks. Otherwise I just delete them or if I'm in a bad book I respond sarcastically (which I know is unhelpful, but I'm only human). I know that's part of the price of posting about our rights  (what some people see as controversial), but it is MY facebook page.
I love this quote....

"The right to marry is about us, it is not about you, any more than the fight for integration was about white people, or a women's right to vote was about men. It is only about you to the extent that you have to live with yourself knowing that you are depriving a significant portion of the population their basic civil rights." - Actress Cynthia Nixon,

Amy, IMO people who make jokes about race, nationality, sexual orientation, urban/rural are usually in the majority and it somehow reinforces their feelings of "superiority" (albeit undeserved).  Cynthia Nixon's quote about rights illustrates perfectly the "power" aspect --- whites having power over blacks, men having power over women etc.  There are so many examples of this -- in religion, in politics, you-name-it.  The thought of giving up this "power" is a major obstacle, and certainly legislation is about the only remedy, poked and prodded by the court of public opinion.

She has always been my favourite actress on SITC; hoping her recognition and popularity helps influence many others.

    Cheers, Linda

You're right Linda. I was shocked this former classmate turned out to be such a right winger. I always think of drunken party boys to be liberals, LOL.
