Mom and Niece DX in the same month

Last month I found out both my Mom and 10 year old niece were diagnosed with breast cancer...my mom grade I, IDC and my niece with stage II. It was a shock that I couldn't even comprehend until recently. Tomorrow my Mom will be having surgery to remove the lump and then she will follow up with radiotherapy. I have faith in the City of Hope where she is being treated that she will beat this cancer and in the future be able to resume her normal life. 

I am graduating from college on Friday and hope that she will be well enoguh to attend. I would rather she rest after surgery; however, she has waited along time to see her daughter graduate and she doesn't want to miss it.She is insistant on being there.

Does anyone know how long it will take for her to be and up about and should she be staying home after the surgery and for how long? 

My niece had a mastectomy right before Mother's day and because of family issues I was not able to be there for her. I feel really bad that she is going through all of this since she is only a 10 year old little girl. 

I know it is really hard on my Mom, too considering her 1st granddaughter is going through the same horrible disease she is dealing with. It is hard too because her grandaughter does not even know her Grandma is going through the exact same thing. 

Anyway, life is tough right now all the way around and I guess today I really realized all of the crappy stuff going on.
