Deodorant recommendations during radiation

During radiation, I am not supposed to wear aluminum-containing deodorants on the side that is being treated. I have tried one brand, but would like to try something else. Does anyone have a deodorant to recommend?

I need some suggestions too.  I just threw out my deod that had aluminum in it. 

Aren't we supposed to stay away from that stuff anyway?   I hope our posters here will offer some good deodorant ideas.   I'm Au Natural at the moment but this weekend we're due for triple digit heat where I live and will need some good old protection for the under arms.

Tom's of Maine deodorant is all natural - that is what was recommended to me by the radiation clinic.  Personally, I can't stand the smell of it now because every time I went to that clinic, it was all I could smell.

You can also use corn starch.  It works really well and keeps you dry too.  I used a big "blusher" brush to put it under my arms.  Tami

I have made a body powder puff by putting the cornstarch in a light weight cotton sock and using a rubber band to hold the top closed. It works great to put the powder where you want it and not on the floor. And I use the 'naturally fresh crystal deodorant' under my arms only because I have a reaction to the aluminum in the anti-perspirants.

My rad nurses recommended Crystal (www.thecrystal.com) which is made of ammonium alum (natural mineral salts) and does not contain aluminum chlorohydrate, paraben or fragrance. I found it at a local food co-op. One word of advice, moisten it and then apply - I failed to read these instructions first!

The nurse in the radiation department where I went also suggessted Toms of Maine. I know exactly how you feel ADK about the smell of it, it wasn't horrible, but brings back some not so good memories. I used it for a little while after I was done with rads, but as soon as I went back for my 1 month checkup from the rad-oncologist doctor, and he said things were looking good, I went back to my regular dedorant.

My Rad techs recommended the Crystal brand products also.  There is one that comes in a spray (which I got in case I get any skin irritation!).  The only downfall of it is that it takes a while to dry and sometimes runs down my side if I spray too much!  I do use it on both underarms and have not run into any problems yet.  I was told that I can use it before my tx but I must put in on at least 2 hours prior. I bought mine at Wal-Mart... I think?   Take care all!

Is it just aluminum to avoid or other metals as well ? I already had some Tom's of Maine. On reading the label I saw that it has other metals in the ingredients.

linn56 - I am not sure,  the best advice would be to ask your rad techs.  Every Dr. apparently has different guidlines.... they will be able to help you more.  Be Well All!

Most of the natural deodorants use tea tree oil and I can't stand that smell. However, Spring Fresh Scent Deodorant Stick (by Nature's Gate) had a very pleasant flower scent and still worked well. As an added bonus, it was also the least expensive. I bought mine at Whole Foods.
