Vitamins

Options

Does anyone know of a website or somewhere I can get some information on vitamins.  I recently started more than I ever have in my life and wonder if they are all safe to take together.  The last couple of days I've been feeling nauseous and it makes me wonder if it has something to do with my vitamins.  I made the mistake last week of taking them on an almost empty stomach - that is one mistake I will not make again.  But now I'm just wondering where I can find more detailed info on vitamins and what's safe to take with what.  I'm currently not on any prescriptions meds.   I am currently undergoing 6  1/2 weeks of rad treatments and the nausea might be due to that but I wanted to rule out my vitamins.

Thanks a bunch, Elaine

Hi!  I can't tell you where to go on-line, But I bet your local health food store would have some info.  If not find a post by Flalady and private message her.  She knows EVERYTHING about vitamins or can tell you where to find out.  Good thinking on your part.... good luck, Tami

Make sure to check with your rad oncologist about taking vitamins during radiation.

I was told not to take any anti-oxidant vitamins while I was undergoing rads. I stopped C, CQ10, D and fish oil...E is another but at the time I wasn't taking it.

I always take my vitamins, about 11 of them after I eat breakfast in the morning.

Don't know about a website offhand for vitamin information.

I checked with my rads oncologist last week about it.  He said I can take anything I want except soy and phyto-estrogens.  So I'm clear there.  I've done some digging but can't find any comprehensive site on vitamins and interactions they may have with each other.

My oncologist just asked that I not take any anti-oxidants 24 hours prior and 24 hours after a chemo treatment.

Lainey, I got a really good book called Vitamin Cures that has a lot of info. Also, if you have a Vitamin Shoppe near you, I got a book they have that tells a lot about every kind of vitamin. The problem with a lot of websites is that they often are trying to sell a specific one. So be careful that it is about the supplements and not the brand.

I also think another great book is Dr. Ray Strand, "What your Doctor Isn't telling you about Nutrtion may be Killing you". Dr. Strand believes that the only way supplements are helpful is if they are taken together. That is why he does not give credence to the studys that only look at one vitamin at a time. He also believes in supplements during cancer treatment, and cites case studies that show they actually help people through treatments. My doctor was okay with me taking supplements during rads, as long as I did not go crazy, she said. I do believe that is why  I got through surgery and recovered quickly, and had very mild side effects from rads.

    Hi Elaine,

I don't know of any websites to get information about taking various vitamins together, but I have a tip that might be helpful if you're still experiencing nausea when taking your supplements.  Sometimes nausea can be decreased or eliminated if you take your supplements before bed.  I would definitely take them with a snack, too.  So, if you're able to eat a light snack before bed and go to bed at around the same time every night, you might want to try taking your supplements then.  I did this when I was pregnant, and it worked wonderfully.  I know radiation treatment and pregnancy are very different, but if you're still experiencing problems, it might be worth a try.  Best of luck.

I currently take vitamins in order to support my health. Due to this I always use this special website in order to get some information about which vitamins and supplements I should take. Maybe your local pharmacy has some information regarding this topic or maby you can consult a nutritionist.

I wish you all the best.

    Hi Elaine,

I might be able to help.  My name is Lance, I am living in Tairua, a beautiful place on the Coromandle Penninsula in New Zealand.  From home I market a supplement product that allows me to get up each morning feeling fresh and ready to take on the day, I used to feel like a pile of rocks each morning.  Like you, I also took an interest in supplements, and it wasn't until I tried these ones that I noticed a noticeable change and because of my results I took the opportunity to work with them myself.  As a consequence of my work I have learned a lot about supplements, I now know that their is a large difference in quality where the majority of products you get off the shelf in the pharmacy or in the supermarket are less than adequate to make a difference.  There is a book out called the 'Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements' which displays very clearly what products are good, and what are not.  What's on the shelf I wouldn't touch with a barge pole and are likely to be unreliable, research shows that 52% of products off the shelf don't even disentigrate properly.  The best brands that are recommended are Creating Wellness Alliance, Douglass Laboratories, Thorne and USANA Health Sciences.  I take and recommend USANAs products because they work for me.  I wish you all the best with your supplement taking and with your health and I hope this has helped.  If you would like any more info I have plenty and am happy to lend a hand, also if you would like to try the product I recommend called the Essentials I can order that for you at wholesale price direct to your door within a couple of days. to check it out go to...

If you wanted to, the best way to contact me is via email at lanceeaston@gmail.com

All the best and warm regards

    Lance

Elaine, definitely tell your dr what you are taking (or find a nutritionist who works with cancer patients) and make sure the amts are in line with recommended amts. Here are two links someone posted elsewhere here. The first one is great as it tells what the supplement does as well as recommended amounts and possible side effects.
