Where did you find help?

I am REALLY single. No parents. Sister and brother in other states so not available. I have friends but everyone works.  My problem: I will be having a mastectomy next month with reconstruction. Looks like you should have someone with you for the first 24 hours when you get home. How did you manage that. Dr. 90210 have shown occasional patients staying a fancy aftercare facilities that are located in hotels. There does not seem to be anything like that in my area. Maybe I will have to pay for a nurse to stay with me for a day or 2. My friends are more than willing to help out but I really do not have anyone who can stay with me for the first couuple of days after surgery. I have DVIS and this is my second mastectomy (1st 31 years ago) so I do not think I will have to deal with chemo etc. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Where do you live? Perhaps someone here would be willing to lend some help? Ask at your doctor's office if they know what other women do in your situation? Sorry that I don't have one good idea for you. Good luck!

Do you belong to a church?  Most churches have volunteers that would sit with you.  Let us know where you live...maybe someone on here is close and would help.  Tami

We are in the process of finding home health care for my in laws who are in their 80's and have been exploring lots of nursing options.  There seem to be many organizations that provide services from 24 hour nursing care by RN's to occasional visits by people who are nursing assistants or techs (they are much less expensive.)  Maybe you could look for an organization that provides those services. You really don't need an RN, you just need an aide who could help you with washing, meals, drains, etc. for a few days.   There is a web site for the National Association for Home Care and Hospice at http://www.nahc.org/.  They will provide you with links to organizations in your area.  Your health insurance company may be able to provide you with a list of services in your area too - and they might cover some of it.  It will be less expensive for them than if you stayed in the hospital for a few extra days!

You can ask at the hospital about Home Health - a CNA student might be available.  At my hospital, we have care navagators assigned to us when diagnosed - if you have such a person, they can help you find suitable home care for a few days - insurance may even cover it.  If any of your friend has college aged girls - one might be able to assist.  Good Luck!!
