Effects of Iodine Supplements on Human Breast Cancer Tumors

Options

From the San Antonio Breast Cancer symposium

Iodine given to breast cancer patients for two to five weeks before surgery decreased cell proliferation and increased cell death (good) in the tumors.

Researchers collected tissue specimens first at diagnosis and then again at surgery for evaluation. The iodine group was compared with a placebo group. Only the iodine-taking group showed the antiproliferative and cell death results.

Can anyone recommend OTC iodine supplements?  Which brand do you take?

cp418, I've been taking Iodoral, which is available at breastcancerchoices.org.  There's also a very active yahoo group that discusses iodine if you want to learn more about it.  It took me a while to realize that a lot of people take thyroid meds in addition to their iodine.  Somehow I had the impression that taking iodine precluded the need for thyroid meds, but that isn't always the case.  I find comfort in comparing notes with others to see what people in similar circumstances do.

The first thing you'll need to do if you take iodine supplements is to understand that the information from the USDA is pretty much worthless.  They recommend 150 mcg/day as a daily allowance and state that it becomes toxic at 1100 mcg.  They could at least put it at 13 mg/day, which is the average daily intake of iodine for the Japanese, and has been for hundreds of years.  ...not to mention that Japanese women have one of the lowest rates of bc worldwide.
