Anyone with an infected port?

I posted this on the Chemotherapy board earlier, but it looks like this is where I should have put this question:

I just found out that the reason I have been experiencing intractible UTI's since my port was implanted in January is because there was a hospital acquired, antibiotic resistant enterobacter infection implanted along with it. With each chemotherapy treatment cycle, as my white cell count drops, the opportunistic infection now erupts, so far causing intense bladder infection symptoms that do not respond to any antibiotics I take. The area surrounding my port also becomes inflamed and tender.I am already highly allergic to two classes of antibiotics, quinolones and tetracyclines, having had anaphylactic reactions to both, so neither class can be used. I understand that only the cephalosporins, especially cefepime, are really effective against enterobacter, but they are very hard on the kidneys, and I have only borderline kidney function. I have already gone into kidney failure once, right after my first TCH treatment. I don't yet know which strain of enterobacter I have, should know more soon.An experienced nursing friend advised me that it would be best to have the port removed, because it could be colonized, and not respond to any antibiotics I subject myself to. Has anyone seen or experienced successful treatment of a colonized port with antibiotics alone? I still have two TCH treatments and a year of Herceptin to go for my breast cancer treatment, so I need a port.I am also afraid, because this type of infection can cause sepsis if it gets out of control.

Anyone who wants to weigh in please feel free to PM me or respond here, all opinions and experiences welcome.
