Most effective way to raise money?

I am looking for advise about the best way to raise money for breast cancer awareness. I have not done much fundraising before so all tips are much appreciated.

Hey, I think I am going to design t-shirts around the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer logo. Personalise them for every donor - do people think this would be a sucessful idea? Thanks!

I have started selling 5O/50 TICKETS, 1/2 GOES TO WINNER AND 1/2 TO FUNDRAISING. I have done well over a few days $210 raised but still have another 2 weeks to sell for this draw.

I rang Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and apparently they are about to launch a new campaign and were too busy to talk to me!! Sounds exciting! I'm going to try and find out what it is!

Hi Katie:

Just to explain about 50/50 draws:  Let's say you sell 100 tickets for $1 each and each person who purchased a ticket has her name or ticket number put in a basket.  You end up with $100, draw a name out of the basket and give the winner $50, whch means you have $50 to give to the charity.

As for fundraising, if you're planning to hold an event (fashion show, concert, gala etc.) the very first thing you need to do is get a SPONSOR -- a company that will underwrite all expenses in exchange for getting its name on all the flyers, tickets, event programmes etc.  So you need to draw up a business plan, showing the potential sponsor how supporting this event will benefit its business, as well as being seen as a "good corporate citizen".  You could also have various levels of sponsorship.  Break down everything that needs to be paid for e.g. printing, hall hiring, catering etc. and have various businesses sponsor each of those things.

The secret is to have all your expenses paid for, so that every dollar/pound you raise can go directly to your cause.

Another revenue generator that's especially popular here in Canada is to hold a silent auction at an event.  If you want to know more about this, just p.m. me.

You could also do a bbq and sell hamburgers, hotdogs and have a drink.  Sell a hamburger and a drink for $2.00.

I approached a local store in town and they will provide the bbq, tent, condiments and juice for nothing.  I will ask the local grocery store to donate the buns.

Set up a table and decorate it with ballons, put posters around town or ask the local paper to donate ad space to advertise it.

 Just an update on the 50/50 tickets I have sold $520 and counting...the draw is on Friday...very successful fundraising tool!

Of course, sponsoring is the best idea, I am sure everyone wants to help a charity and a little from everyone will eventually make a lot and a lot makes a difference.

Hi Michele,

Thanks for the tip but the huge problem with fundraising in the UK is dependent on nice weather!! Here is where the UK fails on setting up a table, but that won't put me off! I will just have to find a marquee or something, or save this idea until Summer.

I am excited about the fashion targets breast cancer campaign, do you guys have it in Canada/US?

Have not heard of that event here in Canada. You know you dont have to do a bbq, youl could approach a grocery store. liquor or beer store in your area and speak to the manager and tell him what you would like to do. Sometimes they want proof of your frundraising.

Saturday would be the perfect day as everyone has to go grocery shopping!

I have also talked to the Manager of our local grocery store and upon showing them my registration for the 60km walk they will allow me to setup outside the store a table to do fundraising. I plan on making up some large posters and putting pink/white balloons on the table. Perhaps having some pink ribbon magnets for sale (up cost by $1.00 or so from what I have paid for them), some pink awareness braclets and maybe some pamplets from the local cancer society on how to peform a breast exam. It will promote some discussion and then I can ask them for a donation to my fundraising.

I also plan on putting up posters around town advertising the event in advance.

Update on 50/50 - $677 as of tonight, plan on getting up to $700 before draw tomorrow...

I love the idea of the 50/50 raffle and started planning one at work.  I ran into road-blocks since Michigan requires a gaming license for all games of chance.  The license takes 6 weeks and a percent of the sales go to the State.  I'm scrapping that idea although it was the best I've heard so far! 

My second thought is to have a bake sale at work.  People in my department have volunteered to bake and we will put the goodies out on a table for everyone to participate.  I'm not sure how to handle pricing though.  I'm leaning toward putting a box for a donation and let people give what they want.  Any suggestions for that? 

My boss is a member of my team and she suggested somehow incorporating the names of the Komen Teams.  They are a hoot in case you haven't seen them before.  Maybe we should vote on the best Team name? Not that it sells anything but may make people stop by and get a cookie while they are there.

I really like the idea with the t-shirts and that you want to personalise them. I would definitely buy one because I am of the opinion that it is very important to donate money. Often it is possible to help people with just a little amount of money. I always try to donate as much as possible. Maybe I will start prospectively with raising money myself. All I need is a good idea.
