Why does my breast hurt so much

I am IDC and will soon be undergoing my mastectomy this month.  I've just developed very painful and deep ach and sharp pain in my left breast. Could this be from cancer growing slowly or from the metal clamps they put in there during my core biopsy?  I wasn;t expecting the pain to start until after the surgery.  Anybody go thru this?

Shanagirl: I was having sharp pains in my breast that started about 3 days after my bx. I had to have an mri anyway, not r/t the pain, and it showed a tumor that wasn't seen before, well i ended up with another bx in the same breast , the lump and the pain turned out to be a hematoma(collection of gelled blood) from my original core bx. they removed it and my lump and pain were gone just like that.

I had the same thing- found out it was just nerve damage, and a big bruise which eventually went away.  I also had a reaction to the metal clip, but it was taken out during the lumpectomy. hang in there.  Tami

    Hi Shanagirl,

I didnt' have any pain until about a week after my biopsy.  I'm still wondering to this day if it was all psychological or not.  It came and went, never lasting long, and never too much pain to complain about (never needed to take any meds for it).  It could have been scar tissues forming and pulling at the surrounding tissues from the stereotactic biopsy.  I think they took out several good chunks of tissue samples during that procedure.

I really had no pains to complain of from surgery.  They kept me very comfortable during my hospital stay (2 nights) with all sorts of meds that cater to my every needs (pain, itching, nausea).

Hi Shanagirl--I too had tremendous pain after my biopsy--it was a massive hematoma slightly smaller than a golf ball. It hurt a lot, and was accompanied by tremendous and colorful bruising on the skin. My doctor recommended Arnica cream--it's an herbal cream sold in health food stores that reduces pain and bruising. It is often recommended by plastic surgeons. Anyway, you might want to check with your doctor, but I really recommend the Arnica --it worked wonders for me.

    Good luck.
