BRCA testing

I have a question about the BRCA 1 & 2 gene.  Today I went to see the genetics counsellor, although I was tested negative, he insists I come in once a year.  He explained to me that because I am negative, my daughters CAN'T be positive, so I don't have to worry about having them tested.  I have been reading quite a bit on the boards, but did not feel that true from other posts that I've read.  Can anyone share some light on this please.

I think I am correct in saying this:  Your daughters can't be positive by your side of the family, but they still have half of their genetic makeup from their father's side.  So the counselor cannot say for sure that your daughters don't have the genes unless their father has been tested.

    PT63,

This is correct, a child can inherit a BRCA gene mutation from either the father or the mother. So, if the father is a carrier of a BRCA mutation, the child's chances of also having that mutation are 50%.

Why does your genetics counseler wants you to come in once a year when you tested negative?

I am BRCA2+ and the last time I saw my genentics counseler was when I got my results.  If I have any questions or concerns I can make another appt.

    I agree with PT63.
