Young and scared-- going for an MRI in a couple weeks

I am 30. My mother was diagnosed with BC at 44, premenopause.  My gyn suggested I get my first mammogram last month because my husband and I are trying to start

a family and now would be a good time.  I went in for my mammogram and then received a call the next day that they had found a ‘suspicious spot' on my left breast.  They scheduled me for a spot compression mammogram and breast ultrasound.  I had those both done and the radiologist came in to talk to me.  She said that she saw nothing to worry about, just that my breasts are asymmetrical, which is not that uncommon.  She did say that she would recommend a breast MRI if my insurance would pay for it.  She also said I should come back in 6 months for another mammogram and ultrasound.  (All of this concerned me because if she saw nothing to worry about then why do I need to go back in 6 months and why the MRI?)

So, a couple days later my gyn's office called and said that my gyn also recommended the MRI if I wanted to go forward with that.  So, I have scheduled it for next month.

I'm extremely worried now even though I probably don't need to be.  Anyone else had a similar experience?  Does this all sound like normal procedures?

    Alicia,

Given your family history, they want to watch you carefully and a baseline MRI is a good idea.  I would think that if the radiologist saw anything of concern, she certainly would have done a biopsy.  Are you dense??  Sometimes MRI is a better diagnostic tool that mammo for those of us with dense breasts.

     My best to you,

    Kimber

Thank you so much for replying. :)  The radiologist actually said that my breasts were not particularly dense.
