Beautiful, Daffodil!

The daffodil has been the symbol of the Canadian Cancer Society since the 1950's.  It all started when the CCS President, Ruth Frankel, had the idea to ship thousands of fresh-cut daffodils from British Columbia all across the country to be sold as a fundraiser at the beginning of April -- which subsequently became officially cancer month.  The daffodil became the symbol of hope -- back in the days when there wasn't much hope connected to cancer.... I was a CCS volunteer for many years, and our uniform (when working in hospitals and cancer care facilities) was daffodil yellow -- not that flattering to the complexion (!) but intensely comforting to our patients.

28 years ago, at the request of our local American Cancer Society, I founded "Daffodils and Diamonds", a luncheon to raise funds for breast (and now ovarian) cancer research. We switched to the National Foundation for Cancer Research so that we had more control of where our $$$ went. Our centerpieces, designed and made by the Committee, always feature daffodils~~~and boy, have we been creative!!

I am hard at work on this year's event on March 12!!!

Daffodil, congrats!  I know where you're at -- one of my groups (Junior Auxiliary) did an annual, same-day luncheon AND dinner/dance every year for the CCS.  Well, we had lots of energy then!!!  It has continued in Toronto as a luncheon only and raises several hundred thousand dollars each year.  Of course I send you warmest wishes for another successful event this year!  (Love the name, by the way -- Daffodils and Diamonds -- very picturesque!).

P.S.  In keeping with the theme of this thread:  no matter which side of the political fence we're on, or whether we straddle it, we can always come together for a good cause....!

I am having trouble understanding the need for campaigning still ... I think in view of our times, he should just televise his signature of the bill.  He should say he wanted to fly to such and such place but in view of people losing jobs and my advise to cut corners and sell airplanes, I, too, am cutting costs. He may have his heart in the right place but publicity about this and his over-heated office are not faring well with the general public. My boss made us lower our temp to 70 degrees and he locked the thermastat.  We brought sweaters to work!  That's ok with me but I think the President should do it too. ... its been a long time since he lived in Hawaii.

My parents came over for dinner last night, their heads are spinning over the Burris issue.  They have friends in Illinois and said that is normal politics there -- pay to play is a must, everyone knew he was not just a nice little old man.  Now my parents wonder if Blagojevich will be spilling beans about politics in Illinois, including Obama.

Like I said, my parents were over for dinner.  My dad is really mad that it seems free speech only goes one way.  He is not debating the issue of whether or not the student was right, but that he was not allowed to be heard!!!!!!  It seems that anyone who is religious or conservative is not allowed to speak, only liberals, aka Berkeley-ites, are entitled to slam God and country!!!  It was hard to find this article anywhere online! 

LOS ANGELES - A community college student has filed a lawsuit claiming a public speaking professor berated him and refused to let him finish a speech opposing same-sex marriage.

In the suit filed last week in a Los Angeles federal court, student Jonathan Lopez said that midway through his speech when he recited a dictionary definition of marriage and recited a pair of Bible verses, professor John Matteson cut him off, called him a "fascist bastard" and would not allow him to finish.

The suit says Matteson told students they could leave if they were offended, and when no one left he dismissed the class.

A student evaluation form included with the lawsuit lacks a score for Lopez's speech, and reads "ask God what your grade is."

Lopez and his attorneys are seeking financial damages and also seek to strike down a code at Los Angeles City College forbidding students from making statements deemed "offensive."

Lopez made the speech last November, days after the passage of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California.

"He was expressing his faith during an open-ended assignment, but when the professor disagreed with some minor things he mentioned, the professor shut him down," David J. Hacker, an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal organization based in Scottsdale, Ariz. that is representing Lopez, told the Los Angeles Times. "Basically, colleges and universities should give Christian students the same rights to free expression as other students."

In a letter to Alliance, Dean Allison Jones said she had met with Lopez, considered his complaint "extremely serious in nature," and had begun a disciplinary investigation. Jones said in the letter she could not elaborate because of concerns for Matteson's privacy.

Jones wrote that two students had been "deeply offended" by the speech, and one of them said that "this student should have to pay some price for preaching hate in the classroom."

The lawsuit names Matteson, the Los Angeles Community College District, its board of trustees and several administrators.

Phone and e-mail messages left for Matteson were not returned early in time for this story, and the offices of the Los Angeles Community College District were closed for the Presidents Day holiday

Yes, I think the professor is the example of hate and intolerance.  Such venom!  Seems like its ok to say there is no God, but not ok to say you believe in God -- ok to say gay marriage is ok but not ok to speak against it ...  America is about free speech, that's why our men went to wars -- to give us all that right.

Why did Obama stand by this man?  Obama should have forced them to have a re-election or special election rather than have his name sullied with Blagojevich.  Now Burris is in the hot seat and with him, Obama!  I wish the dirty politicians would just go back under the rocks they crawled out from.

It seems to me from reading the other threads that hurt feelings and not-so-latent animosities are flaring, rather than evening out into civil discussions. Of course, that is the danger of the quickly written word, where there is no tone of voice to give the speaker's true meaning.

People are scared, and we need to support one another, while realizing that we sisters come here from very different milieus and backgrounds~~~but we all face the possibility of the same future. I would like that future to be the best it can be~~~~pie in the sky? Be nice to somebody today!!! (And bring on the ice cream to go with the pie!)
