FLMA

Has anyone here tried to [or been able to] use FLMA to take care of her gf ? I'm not sure how [or if] to broach the subject at work.  I am a state employee in a right to work state, and feel that I might risk termination for 'outing' myself.

Thanks for any suggestions

I am in Ohio, but I work with a man thats partner had cancer and he took FMLA to care for him. I know that he was on his insuranace plan at work, I don't know if that makes a difference. You should not be treated any different because of your choices in partners. See if you can get ahold of your employee policy book and see if something is in there. If not check with your HR department, they can not "out" you without a good reason. So if your work performance is good. Then I won't worry about asking the question.  Good Luck

Peg, contact the ACLU. I believe you can take FMLA even for your own illness, as long as you have a doctor's signature. You might not even have to say who is sick and why. Since you're in one of the worst states for LGBT rights, but  FMLA is a federal program, but  LGBTs aren't federally protected from discrimination so who the heck knows. Please let us know how you make out.  Just having the ACLU's backing, even if you don't need it, might be helpful because they can always write a threatening letter.
