Sun is out bright as can be and has been all day. We didn't get an ice storm last night though it was cold and did snow. Not much....only like last time, enough to consistently cover the ground. This morning the sun was doing a fine job of doing away with it. When I went to feed the kitties much of the pavement looked like it had rained -- not even any slush at all. Works for me. The idea of ice did help me get out and get my bill payments distributed properly yesterday.

May go back to work -- we are talking about it. It would start out slow and then perhaps increase. We will have to see how things go.

Hope you are all having a pretty day with sunshine.

    I am 63.

I was diagnosed in July 2017, biopsy, surgery, then radsx15. I was stage 2, with no lymph involvement. I am cancer free, they say. We will see.

Welcome Shenandoah !!! Glad you found us. Hopefully you will be 'free' all the rest of your days. That is what we all hope for each and everyone of us. I always found it something of a pickle to get to where I looked forward to retirement or at least a time when life would change in what I assumed would be really good ways. I hate to admit that I allowed myself to be a bit complacent. After many, many yrs. of mammograms, US.'s sometimes added, I took it for granted that part of me would always be okay.

Then-not so fast found me and the rest is history. We all did what we had to do, just as you did and we are here knowing life is a wonderful gift and we treasure each day. I hope you will come often.

Snowed about another couple of inches overnight, and Bob drove home safely. Tomorrow night he'll stay down in Oak Lawn, because it'll snow from tomorrow night till Fri. aft. before starting up again early Sat. 6" predicted tomorrow night, but Sat. is predicted to be much worse. Unfortunately, we have an Indian banquet out in Downers Grove (w. suburb) Sat. night, and a birthday party at the Oak Lawn Hilton late Sun. afternoon. We're debating whether to get a hotel room in Downers Grove Fri. & Sat. night (Bob cancelled his Sat. office hours) or Oak Lawn (gotta look up the distance between the banquet hall and the nearest hotel, and from Downers Grove to Oak Lawn). By the time it all stops Sat. morning, we should be seeing anywhere from 12-15" total. I'm going to insist Bob drive the Subaru in the snow because there's nowhere I need to go for awhile that I can't take public transit or an Uber/Lyft/Via or taxi.

Spoke with my PCP today--as of this morning Crestor was back on the meds list in my patient portal. He never removed it, but the portal had some system-wide glitches for a couple of hours. With a Framingham score of only 4.3 (low-risk) and no prior CV events, he said he wouldn't have prescribed it; but with my trainwreck family history--coupled with the letrozole having spiked my bad lipids and lowered my HDL, that's why he decided to prescribe it. Normal starting dose is 10mg, but he had me split the difference and do 5 instead--and the improvement was dramatic. So I'm staying on it, along with CoQ-10.

Living in a society that undervalues the spirit, we who embrace it are tempted to apologize for our interest. We must stop apologizing, for no subject is more important. It is, after all, love's retrieval. It the answer to global hatred. To invalidate the spiritual life is to shoot at a fireman who is putting out the fire.

    Welcome Shena! Blessings, indeed!

ChiSandy, about the only snow I would welcome these days would be on the slopes of Alta, Telluride, or anywhere in CO on X-country skies! You are a stronger woman than I! Although right now looking out at gray skies on a breezy day, glad I can hibernate while recovering from 2 rather harsh days post-chemo.

Snow started up again about an hour ago. Public schools are closed tomorrow, and Gordy's GF is delighted--she's getting a paid day off from teaching, and down in the Houston 'burbs where she's from they've never gotten "winter wonderland"-level snow. If I could squeeze my bunioned feet into my XC ski boots, I would haul the skis & poles out of the basement, but I don't get up from falling as easily as I used to and my balance isn't all that great. Besides, any patches of bare pavement would chew up the ski bottoms anyway.

Sandy, have you tried your oatmeal with peanut butter? I make a batch of steelcut oatmeal in my crockpot and keep it in the frig, microwave it with some peanut butter on top and a handful of frozen blueberries

When we're helping other people, we're nourishing our souls. Depression or unhappiness means we've got the wrong goal. We have forgotten that peace of mind is our only goal. By concentrating on helping another person, we renew contact with our soul and with God. We can feel peaceful again. . . . Peace of mind has nothing to do with the external world; it has only to do with our connection with God. Love really is the answer. We're here only to teach love. When we're doing that, our souls are singing and dancing.

I make steel-cut oatmeal and cook a few raisins in it -- then when done, a sm. amt. of Splenda brown sugar and a few walnut pieces. I usually make up a pretty big batch and often take sm. baggies and put servings in them, pop in the freezer and can have breakfast ready for several weeks. If in the meantime we get a craving for something else -- its okay since the freezer won't let the oatmeal go to waste. Eating oatmeal I sometimes can go hours w/o any hunger --- and sometimes have to make myself eat because waiting till I'm actually hungry would likely have me eating far too late.

Sun wants to come out today but we are starting into a more negative period which could include some rain or snow, or sleet, but whatever comes will not be so great. We did 'lose' out on the ice storm a few days ago so I'm not betting on anything and just staying alert.

Dh off today -- so um, I'm likely not going to get done what I thought, but its okay. He needs the time off. Sears has become a difficult place to be. Not only the closures that began some yrs. back but the changes coming now in the home town stores. The Kenmore brands are no longer pushed at all, and shipping and warehouse issues have come up as well as exorbitant customer delivery prices. I think it is all in motion for the hometown stores to not be a " Sears " anymore, but maybe just an appliance store. I'm not totally sure what is up and I don't know that Dh knows for sure either. We are just guessing -- but they are as well changing some of the computer programs as well. Like everyone we will have to wait and see.

Hope you are all going to have a good day.

Sears has been on the downward slide for a number of years. Its catalog business used to be big. I don't know what has happened with that. I remember when I was growing up, the new Sears catalog was of great interest. We would order fabric from Sears to make our skirts and blouses and dresses. Almost everything my sister and mother and I wore was home-made. None of those seams ever came apart and the buttons didn't fall off!

I just finished putting the house in order to some degree. DH and his brother have ventured off to the golf course. I hope they don't get too muddy. I wasn't interested in joining them. I hate wet golf. And it has been nice to have some time to myself.

DH's brother is a Trump supporter and watches Fox News. DH and I are not Trump admirers and watch CNN and MSNBC so we've had some spirited "conversations."

This afternoon the three of will go to the movies and see the movie about Churchill. DH and his brother are both history buffs. If it's a well-made movie, I won't have a problem watching it. I would like to see the movie about the three young guys in France who took down the gunman. I heard an interview with them yesterday on NPR. (Which according to my brother-in-law is left wing!) I usually listen to NPR when I'm driving and I learn a lot about interesting subjects.

Hope everyone is having a good Friday.

So does the oatmeal not get lumpy when reheated? I eat mine with ground cinnamon rather than sugar. That makes it taste sweet enough for me. We also add flax seed sometimes.

Carole, I heard the same interview and the movie sounded very interesting. Everyone plays themselves, except for the terrorist. Let us know how you like the Churchill movie. I was a history major, so it sounds very interesting to me.

Our Sears is one of the ones being closed. It looks so pathetic I can't bear to go back in. My friend says it's because the middle class is disappearing. We made most of our clothes when I was young. Mom would take me to a fancy store and then copy what she'd seen. Of course, that required her to be at home rather than having a job.

No -- the oatmeal isn't lumpy when it gets heated up again but then so that it heats evenly I break it up a bit before I start. I don't really know what other kinds of oatmeal may or may not do since I've only used Steel-Cut for so long. I think it is one of the best foods you can have to start the day with and cinnamon is VERY good for you so a sterling addition for sure.

Carole, it can be dicey in the family when people have different governmental views. Dh and I watch MSNBC while all Dh's brothers and one bil watch Fox. Dicey doesn't come close. We made some rules that usually work. If we are invited ( I'm the only female cook ) no discussion of government issues unless VERY short and sweet. I had to use my threat once -- start politics and I re-cover my dishes and I'm out of here -- and I don't think I'll have to ever do that again. I thought the host bil was going to cry so stunned he seemed. I also make extra of what I bring so that bil can have some to keep for snacking afterwards and the thought of not getting that helps as well. I demand very little, but when I do I mean it with every fiber in me. I'm sure it helped that he didn't like that he'd do the clean up after which I am usually willing to do for the fellows so they can talk cars etc.

The two women/wives in the family that lives here passed on -- within a couple yrs. of each other. We pretty much had the no talking government in place anyway, but now with the other two females gone -- I had to reinforce by threats of walking out if they couldn't abide a simple request. I'm willing to do for them but I expect it to be the same two-way street and they would ignore me if they could.

Wow--cooked up some steel-cut oatmeal today, and it bears no resemblance to the instant mushy flaked kind. I have both Bob's Red Mill (ATK winner) and McCann's new quick-cooking (but still steel-cut) version. Had to cut the Red Mill recipe (cooked on the stovetop) by 3/4 because I didn't want leftovers, and it turned out sort of salty (turns out 1/16 tsp. of salt is just about half a "grind"). Did a "control" of about a tsp. of the McCann's in the microwave--its recipe omits salt. Combined the two and topped with maple syrup. The diff. between rolled & steel cut is like night & day. Not going back to rolled (whether instant or "quick").

We got 7" of snow since last night, getting maybe another inch or two by sunset. More snow into tonight and tom'w morning, then again tom'w night into Sun. morning. Staying in with the kitties today--Bob's at the hotel near his hospitals and Gordy's with Leslie (she's from Katy, TX and loves snow--so they're going sledding in the park today). Even though I was up very late last night (and sort of early this a.m.) dealing with phone tech support to take the voicemail off my fax line, when I turned in I was out like a light. There's something about snow falling at night, with nothing much to have to do, that puts me into hibernation mode. Might even nap this afternoon. Late lunch will be bell and poblano peppers and sauteed shallot mixed with leftover corned beef hash, with an egg on top. Already had 2 coffees, so time to switch to decaf. Metropolis, our local roaster, has a fabulous decaf blend called "Xeno's" that tastes far better than any Keurig, whether unleaded or hi-octane. I make mine in an Aeropress, into the Ember travel mug Gordy got me for Christmas (he bought me the regular version for my birthday). I control both mugs via an app on my phone, and they hold my coffee at the target temp. right down to the last drop!

Oh, and did anyone see the E-Trade commercial during the Super Bowl (they're running it on MSNBC) about seniors still doing millennial-appropriate jobs (no, not Wal-Mart or FL airport greeters) because they didn't save for retirement? It's set to the "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," with the refrain "85 and I wanna go home." Some people are scandalized, saying it's age-ist and insulting; but as a senior (albeit a young one), I find it a hoot. My favorite part is the lady decked out in beads, loads of rings, feather boa with matching headband, and pink Beats headphones singing "Droppin' sick beats--they call me DJ Nana." Nearly laughed myself into an asthma attack! Now, though I think we've got enough money to make it to 85 if our bodies cooperate, and I can't stand EDM (electronic dance music), I could learn to DJ...

Sandy, snowing here , but only an inch. Radar looks like it will stop soon, but looking for around 50 on Sunday with 1-2 inches of rain, on top of this snow and Wednesdays snow topped with ice!

I don't drink coffee, but love good tea. Now because of my tachycardia am caffeine free. Miss my tea, both hot and iced, as I haven't found a tasty decaf tea. I say they take away the flavor when they take away the caffeine! Anybody know of a tasteful decaf tea? I like tea, tea, don't do herbal or fruit, except for ice tea.

Sandy, I did forget to mention how much better Steel Cut Oats are. Used to 'freak' me out in the grocery store what the Irish Oatmeal ( steel-cut ) in a can cost and I always by-passed it. Then my friend clued me in on the Red Mill. Since I have found it -- Millville - at Aldi's. I try never to buy it anywhere, any brands unless it cooks for at least 20 mins. or so which I think is the key to it. Since I go to Aldi's for a number of things I now usually get my steel-cut oats there -- just making sure it is the kind that cooks for at least 20 min. I think they have one that goes for less -- but I'm no longer comfortable about getting the 'bang' health wise and would rather just go ahead and cook it longer. Also, I think all together it makes a bit more. Thing is -- and my nutritionist says the same thing -- one serving of it -- I think the pkg. says about half a cup just doesn't do it for me. I have at least a cup and sometimes a piece of toast lt. p-nut butter and jelly.

Couldn't believe anyone could get by on some of the serving sizes that are listed on some things. Guess you could get use to it -- but I would have to maybe go to the small meal plans -- where you eat about 6 times a day and I'm not that disciplined.

Found this recipe and thought I'd drop it in -- I don't do a lot of experimenting with breakfast, but this did sound VERY good to me since I love cranberries and orange anything just about. Doesn't sound like much more effort involved either.

Enjoy this healthy cranberry oatmeal recipe for breakfast! You'll learn my tricks to making ultra creamy steel-cut oats, too. This recipe serves 4 modestly; add yogurt to stretch the portions.

    Ingredients

    • 3 cups water
    • 1 cup almond milk (or other milk: cow's milk, coconut milk, etc.)
    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (or coconut oil)
    • 1 cup steel-cut oats
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • Zest of one orange and juice of one orange
    • Cranberry sauce (recipe provided above)
    • Optional garnishes: toasted and chopped pecans and/or yogurt

    Instructions

    1. In a large saucepan, bring the water and milk to a simmer over medium heat. In the meantime, melt the butter (or coconut oil) in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Toast the oats, stirring occasionally, until golden and fragrant, around 1 ½ to 2 minutes.
    2. Stir the oats into the simmering water/milk mixture. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer gently for about 20 minutes, until the mixture is very thick.
    3. Stir in the salt. Continue to simmer the mixture, stirring occasionally, until almost all of the liquid is absorbed, about 10 minutes. The oatmeal should be very creamy at this point. Stir in the orange zest and juice, and let the oatmeal stand for 5 minutes before serving.
    4. Portion into bowls and top with cranberry sauce, toasted pecans, a splash of almond milk and/or Greek yogurt.

    Notes

Recipe adapted from: The America's Test Kitchen Healthy Family Cookbook.
Make it dairy free/vegan: Just substitute coconut oil for the butter, and choose a non-dairy milk.
Make it gluten free: Use certified gluten-free steel-cut oats.
Preparation tips: If you ignore the orange zest and juice part of the recipe, you'll have a basic recipe for super creamy steel cut oats, which you can top any way you'd like. Nut butters, fruit (fresh or defrosted), toasted nuts, compotes, jam and honey are all good ideas. Greek yogurt is highly recommended.

My PCP simply told me "eat more oatmeal." I'd been eating a couple of 1/2 c. servings of instant per week, so I'm eating 3/4 c. to 1c. of steel-cut. That stuff is filling! (And no offense, I hate peanut butter--except as a meringue pie).

The wet golf was tiring for dh and his brother so we skipped the movie yesterday afternoon. We had cocktails at 5 pm and then went out to eat at an Italian restaurant that makes good muffaletta sandwiches. A type of sandwich that Italians in New Orleans created many years ago on muffaletta bread with lots of Italian deli meat and olive dressing. Salty and not "healthy," but very tasty. I have one every couple of years or so.

Sorry for bringing up politics, which is not encouraged on this thread. I'll have to find the thread Sandy mentioned.

BIL is catching a plane back to Chicago this afternoon about 1 pm. He has been keeping tabs on the snow in Chicagoland. DH will drive him to New Orleans to the airport. I plan to go to the gym and later to the nursing home to do the "bingo detail" with my mother.

I have steel cut oats in my pantry. DH cooks the rolled oats occasionally. I don't find oatmeal or any carb sticks with me for long. Carbs make me hungry in an hour or an hour and a half. One of my standby breakfasts is a slice of toast with peanut butter and banana. The oily peanut butter will keep me satisfied for a couple of hours or maybe 2 and a half hours. If I do eat oatmeal, I put a pat of butter in it along with some sweetener, maybe Splenda brown sugar blend. Maybe chopped toasted walnuts.

I also eat a slice of toast lightly buttered with an egg cooked with the yolk still soft. Sometimes I scramble egg beater and sprinkle a little grated cheese. It definitely takes some fat and protein to stave off hunger for me. And when I get hungry, I'm ravenous. I will eat anything I can get my hands on. So I try to plan ahead and have some healthy food available. WW teaches "pack a snack" when you leave home. I often core and slice an apple and have it handy in a zip lock.

    Happy Saturday.

Carole, I will be sending a pm to you in a bit.

Sure is 'icky' out right now, but we were/are due to go into weather that is going to be quite unlikable for now and through the whole week-end. It has been rather nice ( almost balmy ) for a couple of days so when it starts seeming too nice this time of yr. it is almost always an indication of things we probably won't like. Well, I'll always have plenty of keep me busy inside so no issues for me. Do hope though that nothing happens till get out and get my kitties fed.

Guess it is just as well I didn't get to the car wash since I think -- rain, sleet, snow -- who knows but once we get something decent I'll think about spending on the car wash.

Hope you all have a good Saturday.

Hi Ladies.....been lookng but not posting......thinkng of all fo you.......I have been busy with all the excitement of our Eagles football team....and winning the Super Bowl.........first let me say 99% of the news that many of you saw about fans burning down the city was “fake news”.....and the people who did some damage have been caught from the idiots letting their faces be seen...and are being handled as adults by the Philly police....always a couple in the crowd........the parade went on without incident, and was wonderful.........grandkids all went, schools had off, and many business gave their employees the day off too........a fun day.......what a fantastic team and group of men....all very spiritual, and faithful...when you see men praying in the locker room after and before the games it says a lot......

So here I am.....alive, above ground and taking nourishment........lost more weight..........I am now down 23lbs and counting......I can see the change in the my last blood work.....without fasting my glucose was down 20 points.....from 116 to 96......and dropping..

Hope you all are well, and looking forward to Springtime......hey its just around the corner........but tell that to Chicago and the Midwest.....lo

Glad you are doing so well Ducky. Nice looking forward to Spring present for you. A bit of dedication and work pays off personally. One of these days, and hate to admit how many yrs. I've said that one.

I tend many times to take news with a grain of salt until I've seen it show up again after a few days. By then if not true it has been fleshed out in enough places that the true and false are pretty evident. Was quite a feat for the Eagles and I'm happy for them though I don't follow football or much of any sport for that matter. It was never my thing for me.

We are getting ready here in the mid to southern section of the state to get some bad weather. Icky for us but nothing like what Chicago is having so thanking the snow Gods for that one.

The Super Bowl was quite a football game, Ducky. DH and I rooted for the Eagles because we get tired of the Patriots winning every year. I don't understand why excited fans would want to be destructive. I would guess the guilty ones were drunk. Congratulations on all that weight loss!
