Onc found lump in same breast as previous DCIS cancer.  MRI, P.E.T., and Blood Work all ok.  Should I just relax and be thankful?

I felt a lump a month after the reexcision surgery and had them ultrasound it and it was a cyst. I guess it did show up on the ultrasounds and MRI before but they didn't mention it b/c it was just a cyst. So I am confident that they have it right but will keep an eye on it...

I guess if they are confident that you are ok but of course keep an eye on it. What did they say it was?

Did you have a mastectomy Shirl?  I, too, felt a lump in the same breast as the DCIS and I did have a bilateral mastectomy.  Also, the pathology report showed clear margins and no sign of cancer anywhere else.  I am going to see the PS this morning and will ask him.

AllieM22 - what is reexcision surgery?

Also, everyone, keep your eyes peeled.  I don't trust this disease or my body anymore.  I'm not saying that we should all sit in the corner biting our nails overwhelmed with worry but  keep vigilant (which I know I don't have to tell anyone here).

I'll check in again when I get back from the PS.

Have a great day or at least one without pain.

I'm back - its just fat from the side he tried to move to the front.  Wouldn't you know it would be fat.  Whew - I'm relieved.  One more complication and I am going to have myself put in a coma - wake me when its over!  Just kidding.

kmcraw - This is off topic, but what kind of dog is that?  A Havanese?

Close - it is a coton de turlear - kind of in the havanese / maltese family.  My sister and I live together and she bought her and her sister - names, Diva and Darla.  They are very sweet, loving and playful and dumb as posts.  Diva, the one in the picture, is always looking at me like she has something to say.  It is very disconcerting!  One day I expect she will simply talk.

She's adorable, kmc.  BTW, re-excision surgery is when they don't get clean margins with a lumpectomy and have to go back in and excise (or cut out) more tissue.

No, I had a lumpectomy.  I got my MRI results back and it was also clear.  They said

    it's just scar tissue.

It is possible for it to be just scar tissue especially if it is right where your first excision or biopsy was. I have a lot of scar tissue that made my MRI light up but they said it was good.  They were only looking for cancer and saw none.  Depending on how you personally scar up it is possible for your scar to connect to other tissues and feel/get bigger.  I scar very well so most of my scars do not have huge lumps under them but I have known people who do just that.  They get more scarring under the skin than on top.  Kind of like a scab inside but of scar tissue.  I think that most radiologists can tell the difference and that is why your screening might be clean.  They found no cancer and that is what they are supposed to look for. They may mention scar tissue or they may not because that is considered benign and usually they do not note it....at least that is how it has worked in my case.  I would relax unless your gut says otherwise then there is no harm asking questions and digging further it is your body.  If you have already had DCIS I understand and am sure you are nervous so it might be good to see someone to relieve your stress.  Vickie
