Good news is Olivia had another good day.  She still isn't eating anymore and is still nauseated, but is in a good mood and a little more active.

Bad news is my little pomeranian, Gretel, is not doing so good.  About 4:30am I got up with her because she was coughing a whole lot and sounded terribly congested.  I have meds for cough for her so gave her some and some water.  This morning I called the vet just to have him look her over beings we leave tomorrow.

She was actually in critical condition when the vet examined her, but I didnt realize it.  She has congested heart failure.  It came on literally during the night.  She said was typically how it happens in pups like Gretel.  Anyway, I don't know if she will be alive tomorrow or if she will survive the trip.  Long story, but short version is, she is pretty lethargic from the meds they gave her today, but is breathing better.  She won't eat and I have a daiper on her because she wont go pee pee and will probably not be able to control it when she does.

I am not ready for her to go.  She has been my third child for so long and I love her so much it hurts.  I just cant believe this is happening and certainly can't believe it is happening NOW!

My precious little Gretel is gone.  She went into heart failure around 4:00am saturday morning and the lasix the vet gave her to clear her lungs caused kidney failure.  Her heart had developed a severe murmur and was enlarged to about 3x's normal size.  Her lungs were so full of fluid that she was actually in critical condition when we got there.

I had to make that horrible decision yesterday.

Drew and I were with her, and she was still aware that we were there.  She was so precious but I think she is greatful that she is not suffering.  I don't know I was to busy crying so hard I thought my stomach was going to come out of my body.  Drew and I just held on to her so tight, I didn't want her to go.

She was wearing the cutest little princess t-shirt.  I kept her tags, but left her collar with the pretty pink bow on her.  Drew wouldn't let them put her in the box, he carried her out wrapped in his jacket.  He just loved on her all the way home.  He was with me the day I picked her out at 5 weeks old and he was there the day I lost her at 13 years, 4 months old.

On a "happy" note - yeah, woo hoo happy......we made it to winston-salem safe enough.  Olivia is getting ready for her first test at 9:00am

Sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy/daughter. Every time I hear of a fur-baby passing I think of my family's precious beagle who passed at age 15.

Glad to hear the trip to Winston was uneventful. Praying today that the doctors find out what is wrong with Olivia.

In Winston, if you have time, try to make it to Old Salem. Great historical site with fun activities.

    Karen and family

I can hardly type this because I am shaking and crying for the loss of your Gretel.  They are more than just pets to us they can be like children.  Your story brings back memories of when I had to put my dear Shadow down.  I am soooo very sorry for you and your family......

I am praying that Olivia's test will show the doctors something so that they can diagnois her and get her started back on the road to health.....you need something good to happen today....

my heart is breaking    :-(   (((((((hugs)))))

Sheila,  My Shadow was a beagle!!!  He was almost 13 years old and developed an oral melanoma.....I just kept watching it grow until it popped open his cheek and then I had to let him go....Thank God he had not suffered any during those 6 months from his DX.  The thing just kept growing, he did not even look sick....  I just enjoyed him the last few months I had him......this was 4 years ago and I have not gotten another dog.....want one but don't want to go through losing another one.....

Karen,  I am so sorry to hear about Gretel.  I know how wonderful & Important our fur kids are ...It is so hard to say goodbye.

Here is a Poem I just read this morning:

    Carry You

When I brought you home, I carried you.
I held you close and made a promise that day.
As I breathed in that sweet, soft, clean smell,
I promised to carry you, and keep you safe and well.
I laughed and spoke so quietly to you.
I taught you your name. You showed me your heart.
And I showed you mine, as I carried you, that day.

When I take you home, I'll carry you.
I'll hold you close, as I promised that day.
I'll breathe in that old familiar smell,
and keep my promise to keep you safe and well.
I'll cry as I speak so quietly to you.
I'll say your name. You'll show me your heart.
And I will lose mine, when I carry you, that day.

Okay dejaboo you are on "no talk" or should I say "no type" for the rest of the week, for that poem.  Made me cry.  But it was sweet.

I knew you ladies would understand how devasting it has been.  I cant even hardly breathe.

    So on to some NEWS!!!!!!!!

Well PRAISE GOD we may finally have an answer!  Her tests this morning were abnormal showing she probably has "Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome".  He has ordered one more test for Wednesday, but felt certain it too would be abnormal.

He will refer us to cardiologist in Gainseville if the test is infact abnormal.  But he said there medications to treat it.  Doesnit know how long she would have to take them, but at least it can be treated!!!

Of course we are at a Baptist Hospital  Wink

Great news Karen. I know several people who were helped there when no other doctor could figure out what was wrong.

Estepp, it is a bitter sweet day.  While I feel like my stomach has been ripped out through my throat over Gretel, I am so elated that we are now on the final lap of this never ending race.

Here is a "synopsis" of the tests he did today:

First they did an EGG like a EKG but for the stomach and it showed tach dysrythmias.  Second after spending about an hour with us questioning her in depth (btw, he was FABULOUS with her) he did a lying pulse rate then a standing pulse rate.  Lying down her pulse was about 71-72 bpm then he had her stand and her pulse shot up to 117 - 120 but the problem was it stayed there.  After 10 min of standing she was really nausous and her pulse was still at 117.

So he called a cardiologist and got a "table tilt" test scheduled for wednesday.  We will come home after that unless something changes.  He said it would take a few days to analyze the data and he would call us next week.

Olivia - I am so happy that they have pretty much found the problem and can help you.  That is awesome news.  At the same time I am so sorry for the loss of Gretel.  We had a Boston Terrier with the same condition - once the heart was under control the kidneys would give out and vice versa.  It is a roller coaster trying to balance the two and you can't win.  You have my heartfelt condolences.

Dejaboo - I loved your poem - it made me cry but I loved it.  Thank you.
