Was discovering cancer 'lucky'

Someone was saying to my son that as he is an ox in Chinese horoscope the Year of the Ox is going to be a good year for him.  I laughed and said that the Year of the Rat was not good for me (being a rat and all).  Then I thought about it and decided that perhaps it was a good year despite all the hardship because if I had not discovered it now (in UK mammogram screening starts at 50, I was 47) the situation could have been much worse.  I am not a believer in horoscopes by the way.  Any thoughts?

I'm a rat too, and thought the same thing -- at first!   But then I realized that, since I was probably one day going to be diagnosed with bc (too many risk factors), well, it might as well be 2008.  And for me it was a real eye opener; I learned so much about the disease, about myself, about my husband and family and friends.  A blessing in disguise, maybe??

I think discovering cancer has to be considered lucky, because the consequences of not discovering the cancer are much more dire. I think we can look at the glass as half empty or half full and that being positive is helpful in feeling good about life.

I've been told I was "lucky" that I "only" had DCIS; and I believe I was lucky that the cancer was found by the radiologist on my mammogram (the 3rd year I started having annually). At this point, I guess I was "lucky" but I wouldn't use that term. I LOL when I think how "lucky" I was to develop truncal lymphedema as a result of my bc treatment--surgery, SNB & rads.

Oh well, I have never been lucky before! Whenever I went to a Christmas gift exchange luncheon someone would invariably not bring a gift. When given a numbered ticket and the drawing commenced I end up not having my number called and going home w/out the gift--that's how lucky I've been!! Hee-hee. I still laugh about my unluckiness--never have bought a lottery ticket.
