Pre-Surgery Antibiotics

Options

I went into a double mastectomy (with radiated skin) on one side and my doctor did not give me prophylactic antibiotics (before or right after the surgery), and I was just curious if this is how most surgeries are done.

I have had nothing but infections ever since.

My sister went in after me, and the doctor gave her some.  So either she is not consistent, or she is covering her ass.

Thoughts?

My doctor gave me antibiotics in the iv during my bilat surgery in 2007 and also pills to take after. But for my exchange and nipples I don't remember them putting anything in the iv but I do remember not taking any by mouth after.

I got oral antibiotics to take after all my surgeries, mastectomy and implant exchange included.  I'm pretty sure I got them via IV as well for all surgeries. And I still got an infection after the exchange surgery(the first surgery after my radiation).  They told me that radiation increases the risk for infection, although they are not completely sure why.  Knowing that, I would hope most surgeons would do everything they could to prevent infection, such as prophylactic anitbiotics!  I'm sorry you are having such a problem with infections.  It is not an easy thing to go through. Best of luck to you!

My PS said that I was going to be on antibiotics for a little bit before the surgery.  So I called her offce today and she's gone until next Wednesday.  That will be six days before my surgery.  Would taking them at that point help?
