Spiculated mass?
My ob/gyn said the mass on my mammogram was "spiculated" - biopsy is Tuesday. I'm online trying to figure out what that is and am getting really confused. Some articles say it doesn't always mean cancer - could be other things, some say early stage DCIS, some say ILC. I know only the biopsy will tell for sure but I am going crazy here. Anyone else have a spiculated mass and what was the diagnosis?

Hi michele,
I also had a spiculated mass. From my research I did early on, I found it meant "starlike". Meaning the tumor had branches like a star projecting off it. Another website described it as fingers. I went crazy too and spent hours upon hours on researching.
Unfortunately, mine turned out to be IDC. Try and stay calm and learn as much as you can. The ladies on this board are a great source of information and will help whenever they can.
Good luck!

My spiculated mass also turned out to be IDC. Having said that, I have read (in medical databases) that some spiculated masses are not cancer.
I hope that you are one of the B9 findings. Let us know how you're doing and if we can help we are here and understand the worries.

I also am researching my mri results too death... i have a linear nonmass enhancement. it seems whatever studies I read contradict one another. It is just making me more uptight. Plus, all that medical jargon is like a foreign language. I stayed off the computer today because I think it is only making me more insane.
I truly understand your feelings and fear. My biopsy is on tuesday. Good luck to you.

My first MRI was NOT spiculated.
Went on to a second ultrasound that found nothing.
Had to go back for a second MRI and was told 3% chance cancer....well I'm here....
it was lobular and I was lucky to have the MRI pick it up.
My sister had the same sort of MRI (my twin ) and hers was b-9.
Best to you!
Try not to worry about what might be...it is what it is right now and worry won't change it.
I pray it is nothing.

My biopsy is Tuesday also. I agree about too much infomation. Living in a world where it's at your fingertips is wonderful but will make you crazy. One study shows one thing and another says the opposite. My thoughts and prayers will be with you Tuesday. Please let me know how you make out.

Spiculated is a troubling indication, but not conclusive. I had a spiculated mass on an MRI last year and it turned out to be b9. And my other spiculated mass four years ago was IDC, but here I am four years later doing great. Hang in there.

I also had a spiculated mass that was BIRAD 5. The biopsy result came back as benign fibroadenoma. Because the films showed a spiculated mass, my surgeon wants me to have an excisional biopsy just to be sure. I am scheduled for Jan. 30 and am hopeful that it will be B9. I know the waiting is difficult. I have read so much information that my head is spinning! I've stopped reading so much and I'm just trying to stay busy until I get the results from the excisional biopsy. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
