New dx of breast cancer and am having bilat mastectomy with recontruction on Jan 28th. Don't get any vacation pay or sick pay with my job and have to COBRA insurance. My job requires lifting and not sure how long before I will be able to work again. Any ideas for paying my monthly bills and COBRA?

Hi Peggysue,
I read your post on how to pay your bills. Your focus shouldn't be on your finances right now, but on dealing with your diagnosis and your recovery. Is there someone in your family who could help you out? Maybe the reality is that you won't be able to keep up with your bills and will need to eventually file for bankruptcy. There are worse things than that and what you need to focus on now is your recovery. I'm not from SD, so I'm not sure if there are any programs for aid in your state, but maybe your doctors or someone through your work could direct you. You might try a social service agency and see if they have any suggestions. If your job is too physically demanding after surgery maybe you can find something in a medical office using your connections through work. I wish you well and hope things work out for you. ~Mobetta

Peggy sue,
What a difficult situation to be in! As if the dx isn't enough. I will be doing the same thing as you on the very same day, so I'll be thinking of you and hoping we both have easy recoveries!
Do you own a home? If so, maybe a home equity line of credit would help bridge the gap.
Thats what I have been using to help meet college tuition bills for my kids. Getting a little nervous myself about how to pay the upcoming medical bills

There is a member here that has created a wonderful list of agencies that assist with some things....her name here is BadBoob....
If you go to the members site and search her name you should be able to find her listing...
best wishes to both of you

You will be in my thoughts and prayers too on Jan 28th across the miles. My surgery is in Sioux Falls, SD. Where is yours? I know of place in MN that help breast cancer patient during recovery from when my sister in MN went through bresat cancer 2 years ago. There is an "Angel Foundation", "Hope Chest", "Ride for the Ribbon" that help with bills, but they do not cover South Dakota. So if there is anyone out there from MN check them out

My surgery is in Syracuse NY, at least its all happening during the snowy winter months!

peggysue ~ Here is a link to that list Jule mentioned. Hopefully, there may be resources on it to help you in your situation: http://bb67.wikispaces.com/
Other than that, I wonder if your local ACS office can be of any help? They probably can't help with major expenses, but they may have various services available to give you other needed support.
Good luck with your surgery ~ Deanna
