Aromasin and Sore Lining of Mouth and Cheeks

Options

I have been suffering for a few months now from very sore lining of my mouth - it gets worse with spicy foods and so on but it is always sore.  I now have reverted back to a simple toothbrush as my battery operated one is too hurtful to my mouth.  Like everything else in my life, I wonder if it might be a side effect.  I was on Tamoxifen for 2 yrs and have now been on Aromasin for 1 year.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I had mouth sores as a side effect of chemo, but that went away afterwards and this has only happened again in the last couple of months.  Any responses will be most welcome!

I am actually on the way to the dentist for the third time in a month, trying to figure out why my teeth are sore and sensitive.  He has not found anything wrong with my gums, and will be doing xrays today to see if the bone is the problem.  Anyway, to let you know, I was on Femara for three months, and the problems with my mouth started after I began taking this drug.  (It is a sister AI to Aromasin.)  I couldn't tell from your posting if it was your teeth that were sore, but I will let you know what we find later today.  Seems like there is always something you have to deal with while trying to get through treatment.  By the way, I stopped the Femara about three weeks ago, and started taking Tamoxifen yesterday.  Hope that doesn't make my mouth continue to be an issue.  I will keep you posted.

Creampuff - it's actually the lining of cheeks and mouth as opposed to the teeth themselves.  Good luck and let me know what you find out.

Not on anything right now but the Tamoxifen (prior to that the Femara).  No pain meds, and no other treatment drugs.  The dentist says that due to the chemo/radiation my salavary glands have been producing more placque than normal, and it has formed below the gum line.  The onc had said not to have my teeth cleaned during treatment or have any xrays taken, so after almost eight months without cleaning, I now will need to have periodontic work done.  He says that this could be what is causing the soreness in the teeth, so will get that done as quickly as they can work me in to their schedule.  jazzydog, you may want to visit with your dentist, and maybe he can be of some help in resolving the issue with your mouth soreness.

soreness of the teeth I had, my dentist said it's because I have less saliva and put me on sensodyne tootpaste and it did the trick. Dry mouth could come he said from chemo, now I think AI. Have had needed a root canal and many fillings on teeth since my journey has started. Did not use to have any of these problems before BC  and AI.

Hi Jazzydog2, I had bad mouth, tongue, etc. sores in my mouth while on AC chemo. My Onc Pharmacist suggested L-Glutamine Powder (!00% pure - free form.) One tablespoon twice daily. It's a gritty powder, so kind of hard to drink in juice, but doable. I put mine in yohurt. It speeds healing to sores and other chemo patients have also said it helps. I use NOW - L-glutamine powder. You want to make sure it's pure. Also Biotene mouthwash and Biotene toothpaste, which others have mentioned, help tremendously, too. I know it's a drag. I'm a singer - on hold for a while, but hanging in there. Hope this helps. Cheers, Debi

I believe the Arimidex I have been on has caused soreness of my tongue

and any spicey food I cannot eat now. So one thing that has helped is

Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth. That might help you.

You're on the right track. I'm a hygienist. Sensodyne will help with teeth, not gums. You need Biotene if your mouth is dry or something with hydrogen peroxide like Peroxyl or Listerine Whitening. Or...you can mix the peroxide (3%)50/50 with water or mouthwash. Rinse for at least 30 seconds a few times a day. Good hyg is very important. Make sure you are brushing at the gum line.

Hi! New to this discussion.  Have been on Aromasin since the beginning of May 2012.  Yes I have terrible mouth and gum sores.  Also, have a partial plate that I can hardly bear to use any more.  Making appointment with DDS, hopefully this week.

Hi. I am experiencing awful dry mouth and soreness to the mouth wall, tongue - just feels like I have burnt my tongue. Dentist is going to refer me to someone. I was originally on Arimadex but came off that due to the mouth and went on Aromasin. No difference - really gets me down. Also getting weird pains in my head - not like a normal headache. More often than not, the pain goes as quick as it comes but still very concerning. My GP has arranged for me to have a CT scan to put my mind at rest - which I am hoping and praying will do and that they don't find anything.
