I was listening to a talk show while running errands today. A manc alled in and said that his wife was working for a Christmas tree place where employees  were not allowed to say "Merry Christmas". They had to say "Happy Holidays" instead.

KAK..love the dreidle song! Not too many nice Chanukah songs out there and most of them are children's songs. This is one of them and they jazzed it up. I love it. I am sending this to my youngest son. I can see him singing and doing this. He loves this stuff!

Shirley..thanks for the yummy recipe! I have no kids in the house and I don't eat these but I used to make potato latkes for the kids. In the States, this is a tradition. In Israel we eat jelly donuts and every year the bakeries come out with fancier and fancier ones. When I was in the mall, they were selling them right and left..beautifully decorated and frosted ones and people standing in line for miles!!

Well..MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you who celebrate this most important holiday in your culture. I find it to be very special, grew up with the lights and snow and on Christmas eve when all was quiet in our suburb and families were together, we'd take a drive around the neighborhood and enjoy the decorated and lit up homes. We made special trips to downtown Chicago to see all the windows decorated.

I sang Christmas songs as part of my choral singing in high school. I will admit, that as a teenager and a rebel, I didn't like doing it. I was also on a Christmas album with a big photo of ME on there! And I had to wear jingle bells on my wrist and sell the albums in school.

Today, as an adult, I understand that the Christmas songs are classics and they are beautiful. I love them.

Happy Chanukah to those who are going to be lighting the 4th candle tonight!

ravdeb, I'm glad you checked out the Dreidel song.  I was going to PM you with it.  I think I have to buy the whole album.  It's too wonderful!!

I was listening to a British radio broadcast today of the "Nine Lessons & Carols" sung by one of their premier children's choir's with readings of 9 passages from the Old Testament & the New, from mainly the older & beautiful St. James version of the Bible.  And I was struck once again by the fact that the story of the Messiah is a Jewish story first of all, not a "Christian" one.  It's the story of a people colonized, enslaved & displaced, hoping that their god has not foresaken them & will fulfill His promise to them.  It continues to amaze me that anyone calling herself or himself a Christian can forget this, forget Moses & Abraham & the prophets, forget that Mary was a young Jewish girl & that Jesus was a Nazarene.   "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel & ransom captive Israel" is not just a line from a Christmas carol, but the prayer & plea of an ancient people in a time of hardship.

So, Peace & Good Will to all.
